Owner Insights
We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Softube Saturation Knob.
Features and functionality
-
The Softube Saturation Knob lacks gain control, requiring a utility to manage output levels, which can otherwise increase the overall loudness significantly.
Source -
The Saturation Knob acts predominantly as a soft clipper, automatically reducing output gain when the knob exceeds certain values, enhancing perceived loudness.
Source -
In "Keep low" mode, the Knob primarily applies asymmetric distortion with soft clipping on the waveform's negative part, and adds soft clipping to the positive part at higher settings.
Source -
"Neutral" mode soft clips the bottom waveform part up to knob value 4.5, then hard clips it, while the top waveform part is smoothly soft clipped with additional complex distortion.
Source -
"Keep high" mode mirrors "Neutral" but retains more of the waveform's bottom part, allowing samples near 0 dBFS to remain unclipped, preserving peak dynamics.

User experience
Comparisons
-
Users note that while Ableton's Saturator offers multiple parameters for control, the Softube Saturation Knob is praised for its simplicity with just one knob.
Source
Use cases and applications
-
For maintaining low-end clarity, users recommend using the Saturation Knob in parallel processing to avoid muddiness in bass-heavy applications.
Source -
The "Keep low" and "Keep high" modes utilize crossover filters to distort specific frequency ranges, useful for basslines without losing sub-bass power.
Source
Software and compatibility
-
The Saturation Knob uses iLok protection, a consideration for those managing multiple software licenses with iLok.
Source -
Users can selectively install the Saturation Knob without affecting other installed Softube plugins, addressing concerns about overwriting existing setups.
Source -
Despite initial concerns, the master installer allows users to choose specific plugins, leaving others uninstalled by default, minimizing unwanted software clutter.

Grit
This great and free plugin is one I'm using the most in the mixing process. From subtle warmth to dirty distortion, this little one knob tool is very useful to add analog dirt and make up gain on your tracks. It's my secret tool to distort the electric bass and sometimes on guitars. The keep modes is the essential feature of this plugin to increase low end or boost highs

this does so much for a 2 control freebie
My most used free effect. Hands down. This guy has 2 crappy controls but because of the distortion engine its so useful. The way it adds subtle harmonics at lower settings but can sound like an overloaded opamp when cranked up is marvelous. Throw in the ability to only distort the highs or lows and you have one of the most useful distortions ever. I like to use this in conjunction with other multiband saturation plugs sometimes to really tailor things.... I just wish it had a crossover control for the low to high split but beggars can't be choosers, they give it away for nothing, right?

I'd give this 5 stars if this were more configurable
Very first saturator plugin I ever got into. It's simple and effective.
