PROS

  • Freeware with robust features including a dynamic EQ and de-esser

  • Dynamic bands act like a compressor without affecting the whole signal

  • Built-in analyzer in the free version aids precise adjustments

  • Matches output gain well to avoid unwanted volume increases

  • Versatile, suitable for vocals, bass, mastering, and group buses

  • Excellent alternative to more expensive EQ plugins like FabFilter

  • Allows precise control over harsh frequencies with threshold settings

CONS

  • User interface can be unintuitive for beginners

  • De-esser preset may darken vocals, requiring further adjustments

  • Some users find it hard to work with initially

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Tokyo Dawn Labs TDR Nova.

Comparisons

  • Users prefer Nova GE for its combination of dynamic EQ and smart operations over Ozone and Neutron due to their higher CPU usage and lack of sidechain or fine-grained controls.

    Source
  • TDR Nova GE is often compared to FabFilter Pro-Q for EQ tasks and Soothe for resonance control, though it's noted to be less precise than Soothe.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Oversampling in Nova is tied to bandwidth values, with Eco mode at ~100kHz and Precise modes at ~200kHz, impacting processing quality.

    Source
  • Precise+ mode introduces gentle saturation, affecting EQ areas subtly; it's nearly impossible to mimic clipping due to its soft saturation characteristics.

    Source
  • The dynamics section of Nova uses "dynamic phase," meaning phase changes with compression/expansion, influencing distortion during fast attack/release settings.

    Source
  • TDR Nova features a parallel architecture EQ, which reduces artifacts in dynamic phase as each filter adds rather than multiplies them.

    Source
  • The TDR Nova GE edition includes smart operations like "dynamic deresonate," which is particularly useful for taming resonances and auto-balancing mixes.

    Source
  • Nova GE excels on busses for cutting specific frequencies, allowing other sounds to shine without compromising the mix integrity.

    Source
  • Nova GE offers 6 bands, compared to the free version's 4, enhancing its capability for detailed frequency adjustments.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The timing in Nova is frequency-dependent, with lower bands defaulting to slower dynamic behavior, enhancing control in complex mixes.

    Source
  • Nova GE can effectively tame persistent issues like room standing waves and wolf notes with its static deresonate feature.

    Source
  • The HF limiter module in Limiter 6 is favored for podcast mixing, acting as an extra de-esser and providing a smooth final output.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Historically, $19.99 is noted as the lowest price for Nova GE, making it an attractive option for those without a dynamic EQ.

    Source
  • TDR plugins, including Nova, often go on sale, with some users reporting prices as low as $10, making them a cost-effective choice for many.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Some users find TDR plugins to have relatively high CPU usage, comparable to Ozone and Neutron standard editions when loaded as full hubs.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners prefer Nova GE over the Kirchhoff EQ for its quality and user-friendly features, despite having used Kirchhoff extensively before.

    Source
  • Owners transitioning from Nova's free version to GE find the upgrade worthwhile for its additional bands and smart functionalities.

TDR Nova Equalizer Review - Bedroom Producers Blog

bedroomproducersblog.com

TDR Nova is praised as a top-notch freeware EQ plugin, transforming seamlessly from a basic parametric EQ into a precise dynamic equalizer. Its features, like EQ Gain and a spectral analyzer, set it apart as more than just a typical freebie. While some might find boosting high frequencies harsh, the gain compensation helps maintain balance. Its polished interface and intuitive design make it user-friendly for both beginners and experienced users. Although a few users report sound issues, the consensus is that Nova remains a clean, versatile tool that's hard to beat in the free VST market.

A poor man's FabFilter. Great for de-essing vocals.

So for a while I've been struggling to keep the S's and C's under control in vocal mixes. The default de-esser that Reaper DAW provided was no good either.

Enter the TDR Nova. It's a freeware EQ with 4 bands to control, and also comes with a De-Esser preset. It has a threshold control that detects the harsh frequencies and keeps them in check. Great stuff.

However, it's not a perfect plugin. The user interface is a bit unintuitive to use at first, and the de-esser preset will cause the vocals to sound rather dark so you do have to re-enphasize the mids and high frequencies afterwards.

Still though, nonetheless a great plugin to use for de-essing vocals without busting the bank for a FabFilter.

Oh yeah. Eq from people who seem to actually like the logic of EQ

Damn fine Eq. That whole dynamics schpeal on bands is genius. Sort of a cheat code of timing horseshit without having to bust out compression (which may affect whole signal.) or multi band compression.

Free version is functional as hell. Just 4 bands. Still enough for basic stuff. Give it a go.

HAS ANALYZER in free version also. oooo yeah that's great.

Excellent alternative to replace your general eq from your daw's eq, but don't want to spend 170 bux for fabfilter.

BEST EQ EVER!!!

Amazing Dynamic Eq. Tries to match the output gain as best as possible so you don't add a lot of volume to you mix. It also acts as a compressor if a threshold its exceeded.

Best free EQ ever!

Comfortable to use and pretty nice results.

Un EQ dinámico gratuito bastante poderoso

Me gusta usarlo en voces y bajos debido a su poder dinámico.

C

one of the best freeware plugs out there

Use it on every project. Sometime in the master chain, sometimes on a group bus. Invaluable.
