Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about FabFilter Saturn 2.

Features and functionality

  • Saturn 2's dynamics control is pivotal, allowing modulation for unique effects, like creating side chain compression-like effects with transient followers.

    Source
  • The transient follower in Saturn 2 can creatively modulate dynamics, enhancing mix elements with a bubbling effect.

    Source
  • Saturn 2 can function effectively as a multiband compressor, offering more utility than just saturation.

    Source
  • Users highlight Saturn 2's "warm tape" mode for certain specific uses, although it's not a full tape machine emulation with characteristics like wow and flutter.

    Source
  • The "Destroy" algorithm within Saturn 2's style menu is often compared to a bitcrusher, offering unique sound modulation when the drive is adjusted.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Eric Valentine effectively uses Saturn 2 for drum saturation, making it a preferred choice for those seeking nuanced drum processing.

    Source

    Source
  • Saturn 2 is recommended for its capability to modulate dynamics with envelope generators, closely emulating tape plugins from UAD and Softube.

    Source

Comparisons

  • While effective, Saturn 2 is often compared to Decapitator, with the latter being favored for quicker, simpler saturation tasks.

    Source
  • Modern tools like Saturn 2 offer flexible bit reduction, contrasting with older hardware like the 12-bit EMU Emax, which had limitations but distinct tonal characteristics.

    Source
  • Saturn 2 retains more high frequencies and sounds more aggressive compared to UAD Studer and Waves Kramer, which offer a rounder, more compressed sound typical of tape.

    Source

User experience

  • Saturn 2 is praised for its multiband and parallel saturation, offering flexibility and depth that other simpler plugins lack.

    Source
  • Owners commonly overuse Saturn 2 initially, which is seen as a valuable learning experience to explore its full range of features beyond just saturation.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Saturn 2's interface design focuses on core controls for simplicity, while additional controls are accessible for those seeking deeper customization.

Critic Reviews

FabFilter Saturn 2

soundonsound.com

FabFilter Saturn 2 significantly enhances its predecessor with a sleeker, more intuitive interface that makes accessing its vast sonic capabilities far easier. The plugin shines with its multitude of distortion styles and improved visual feedback, allowing for creative modulation without confusion. However, this complexity remains—users seeking quick, straightforward effects might find it overwhelming. While it's a fantastic tool for those looking to explore nuanced saturation, those targeting traditional amp simulations might be better served by simpler options. Overall, Saturn 2 is a triumph in versatility and usability, albeit with a learning curve.

FabFilter Saturn 2 Review

musictech.com

FabFilter Saturn 2 shines with its rich array of distortion and saturation options, making it a standout in its class. The intuitive interface and impressive sound palette allow for creative experimentation, with multi-band processing that enhances every track beautifully. However, the learning curve is present, and the GUI could use clearer legends for some controls. While it excels in functionality and sound design, some users may find themselves frustrated by minor usability quirks. Nevertheless, for producers seeking versatility and depth in their mixes, Saturn 2 is a powerful tool worth considering.

positive

FabFilter Saturn 2 - Attack Magazine

attackmagazine.com

FabFilter Saturn 2 is a robust update, enhancing its predecessor with a stellar array of distortion types and an expansive modulation section that invites creativity. Its ease of use and intuitive layout make it accessible for both novices and seasoned pros. However, the hidden output controls can be frustrating, and the need to manually select presets detracts from its streamlined design. While it competes well in a crowded market, its price is justified by the quality it delivers. Saturn 2 is highly recommended for those looking to add depth to their mixes but may not offer enough innovation for users of the original Saturn. Overall, it shines as a versatile tool for any producer's toolbox.

magneticmag.com

FabFilter Saturn 2 redefines multiband saturation with its extensive customization and versatility, making it a must-have for producers seeking warmth and depth in their mixes. Its array of distortion modes and modulation options empowers users to sculpt sound like never before. However, the sheer complexity can be overwhelming, potentially deterring beginners. The user interface, while visually appealing, may require a learning curve to fully exploit its features. Overall, this plugin stands out as a powerful tool in the mixing arsenal, despite its intricacies.

A Must have

Great as a utility for making peaks behave, but even better creatively for just completely mashing whatever it's fed. Great for distortion with character rather than just a noise blitzkrieg, very easy to dial in a tailor-made custom bite. Perfect for more industrial styles of electronica like Gary Numan and NIN and depeche Modes current 2019 sound. I have other saturation plugs such as Izotope Trash and some Nomad Factory stuff, but Saturn feels much more robust, like its encased in Kevlar . A veritable snarling beast. Loving it !!

The only thing i'd like is the fullscreen capability found on the pro Q 3 and Pro MB, but that would be nitpicking. Can't fault the sound at all. Awesome comes as standard for any fabfilter plugin.

Saturation...

Saturation I can actually use. I've got 3 go to saturation plugs & this is by far the most versatile. Being able to do band specific distortion is what is missing on my other favorites. Thermonic Culture Vulture is great but it's a bit of a hammer.

This can be as subtle or as gnarly as you like. Makes it very handy.

That said it's not like hitting tape. Nothing is.

When I need tape saturation, I hit tape.

Dunno why "tape" plugins are so popular...

Go to a goodwill, get a tape deck of some kind- reel to reel, cassette & hit tape if that's what you want. Likely cheaper than the plugin your buying. Just requires a bit of thought.

dIsTorTiON

My absolute favorite distortion plugin since the simple Camel Crusher and Sausage Fattener. This is a plugin that distorts without making an ugly useless sound. I find it useful simply for warming up a sound as well, but I primarily use it for its unique distortions.

Great sound, simple interface.

Saturn is actually my backup distortion behind Trash 2 and Ableton's Saturator, but it has proven itself useful many different times.

The multi-band controls are the best I've ever used and can be such a relief to use an plugin with an interface that is this easy to navigate.
