Reviews

PROS

  • Enables perfect tone balance before breakup in small venues

  • Maintains amp's natural sound and response at manageable volumes

  • Built like a tank, ensuring durability

  • Provides full control down to bedroom volumes with minimal sound coloring

  • Bright and deep switches effectively change sound for better customization

  • Reduces dB without significantly altering amp tone, ideal for home use and front of house

CONS

  • Loses some headroom and sound quality at -16 ohms

  • Incompatible with amps over 200 watts, limiting its use with high-powered setups

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about THD 4 ohm Hot Plate.

Setup and maintenance

  • The speaker cable length in combos can be restrictive, necessitating a rare speaker extension cable for optimal attenuator positioning.

    Source
  • It is recommended that attenuators like the THD are rated for double the wattage of the amp to prevent excessive stress on components.

    Source
  • Owners utilizing the THD Hot Plate report the importance of experimenting with input and channel jumping to achieve desired breakup tones.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The THD Hot Plate allows line-out to a DAW, enabling custom cab IRs for recording purposes.

    Source
  • It's crucial to match the amp's speaker output impedance with the attenuator to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.

    Source
  • When used as a load, the Hot Plate's fan activates instantly and spins rapidly, which differs from its behavior when connected to a cab.

    Source
  • The Weber Mass attenuator includes a treble boost switch (+1, +3 dB) to compensate for high-end loss, beneficial for amps like the 74 Bassman.

    Source

User experience

  • Using a 16 Ohm Hot Plate on an 8 Ohm amp is typically safe, but it reduces the tone control effectiveness.

    Source
  • Some owners report that the Hot Plate can lead to cranking amps higher than usual, potentially shortening power tube life.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The THD Hot Plate can act as a load box without a cab, but this has caused issues when paired with high wattage amps like the 100-watt Marshall Plexi.

    Source
  • The THD Hot Plate rated for 2 ohms is recommended for older Fender amps, which often require non-standard impedance settings.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Alternatives like the UA Ox Box are suggested for similar applications but with potentially more reliability for load handling.

    Source
  • The Fryette Power Station is praised for its transparency and versatility, especially when used with vintage amps like the '67 Super Reverb and '64 Bassman.

    Source
  • The Rivera Rock Crusher is favored over models like Weber and THD for its reactive load and direct out features, despite lacking IR and reamping capabilities.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some users experiment with using a Tube Screamer or similar overdrive pedals instead of an attenuator to achieve desired breakup at lower volumes.

THD 4 ohm Hot Plate

Front of house has to love it when they see a guitar player with one of these. Your able to dump db's without changing the tone of your amp, you might hear a little change but not much. Great piece of gear and comes in handy when playing at home, let's say through a Marshall:-)
