> The Box Of Rock is a great pedal, but I found it was a little dark. The big distortion was a little bit murky, so the BB pedal has been doing all the big distortion stuff. And these actually layer pretty well; you can use the yellow side of the Box Of Rock, the overdrive side, with the BB, and they do gain up rather nicely. You can just make out a Xotic BB Preamp at :07s in this live performance of "The Wire". "The signal chain starts with a Dunlop MC404 CAE Wah into an Ernie Ball 6166 volume pedal. Next is a Wampler Ego Compressor, a Boss GE-7 Equalizer customized by Analog Man, a Visual Sound V2 Truetone Clean Boost, a Xotic Effects RC Booster, a Xotic Effects BB Preamp, and a Creation Audio Labs MK 4.23 Clean Boost."more

"Possibly my favorite pedal of all time. In Death Cab, I’m using it for my medium to heavy gainl/lead tones. However, I’ve used this pedal for years in all sorts of roles, from a clean boost to a dirty boost to a simple EQ to a rock distortion machine. My original BB Preamp got wet during soundcheck at Red Rocks at our show earlier this year, I foolishly didn’t have a backup, and the thing shorted out during the second song. I had a disaster of an evening as a result, so dependent am I on this miracle baby. I learned my lesson and have three now!"more
Overdrive/Preamp Effects Pedal with Active 2-band EQ, Gain and Volume Controls, and True Bypass
Just a little gain will do. This has a warm saturation that's very mid heavy. Play it through a slightly dirty amp (or stacked with another overdrive) and you have the sustain that reminds you of Andy Timmons signature lead tone. Raise the Treble and lower the Bass to get a more focused Marshall attack.
I'm new to the world of pedals/electric guitar, but this pedal is killer. Great sustaining gain when turned up. Sounds great with my Traynor YCV20 II amp and Fender American Strat. I don't know for sure, but I believe this is in the same ballpark as a Fulltone OCD pedal. The BB Preamp makes me feel like a rock star, even with just simple chords and rhythm. I like how dialing the pedal's gain from low to high gives a wide ranges of clean boost to distorted gain. So tasty, this pedal.
This a transparent boost, and can go from crips cleans, to an edge of breakup to OD territory. It has a very natural sound, and the EQ is very helpful in shaping the tone. Built like a rock, and when used with other OD pedals can provide limitless beautiful results.
this is a high gain tubescreamer or SD1 with treble and bass controls... in fact, the whole xotic line was TS/SD based until they started doing the SL drive and EP booster... its a really good sounding pedal, but it wasn't for me. I believe EHX's crayon is ripped off of this pedal. Personally I think the MXR custom badass OD is a similar take on this sort of thing that is way easier to dial into my personal gear preferences.
