Review: Universal Audio UAD-2 DSP Accelerator

mixonline.com

The Universal Audio UAD-2 SOLO Core PCIe DSP Accelerator Package impresses with significantly enhanced processing power, offering up to 10 times the plug-in capacity of its predecessor, the UAD-1. It's a boon for DAW users, providing the creative freedom to run multiple complex plug-ins without the usual DSP constraints. Backward compatibility ensures seamless integration with existing UAD-1 setups. However, the initial software version lacks the ability to save plug-in assignments, which could inconvenience users who collaborate frequently. Despite this minor hiccup, the UAD-2's performance boost and expanded plug-in support make it a worthwhile upgrade for studio owners.

UAD betrays you as loyal customer

The use of a DSP accelerator card in modern PC-s is not really justified as the processing power is nowhere near of what the CPU can provide. I think of this card more as a dongle for the plugins. The plugins are nice but they are still only plugins and while plugins got some advantages they aren't the real deal. UAD does not offer upgrade options for users of older plugin versions which means you have to repurchase the same hardware emulation over and over as they "improve" a bit, which is odd because they sold it in the first place as authentic recreation of classic hardware. So beware the UAD platform is a ripoff machine.
