Critic Reviews

Waves OneKnob

soundonsound.com

Waves' OneKnob Series simplifies music production with its single-knob approach, making it easy for non-technical users to enhance their sound. While the processing is top-notch, the limited control may frustrate seasoned mixers, especially given its price. It's handy for quick fixes or live DJ sets but might not justify the cost for more complex mixing tasks. For those seeking simplicity, it offers some utility but lacks the versatility found in more comprehensive bundles.

Waves OneKnob Bundle review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Waves OneKnob Series Plugin Bundle offers simplicity with its single-dial approach for each of its seven processors, making it user-friendly for those overwhelmed by complex interfaces. While the effects like Brighter and Phatter are effective in-channel, offering smooth enhancements without being overly aggressive, the bundle falls short in versatility. The lack of multiple controls limits the depth of sound manipulation, and some effects like the Limiter and Driver may not suit all needs, especially for output channels. Priced comparably to fully-featured suites, it might not appeal to seasoned producers seeking comprehensive options.

For ‘engineer-challenged’ people like me, these plugs are a godsend. OneKnob Brighter, Driver, Pumper – all are delightfully easy to navigate and every tweak makes me smile. You know that horrible feeling when you enable a plug, adjust parameters, and just keep clicking… waiting for something to happen? It’s the worst feeling in the world. These plugs do NOT do that!

I usually process the body and transient separately, then fade them into each other and compress. Often it’s good to distort and add harmonics, and then use a filter such as OneKnob Filter and automate it so that a steep low-pass filter cuts the high frequencies and deadens them in the first 15-20 milliseconds after the transient hits. When distorting the body, you also get unwanted high harmonics, which the filter automation can tame to taste. If you do this, make sure that you join the transient to the body at a zero crossing and in context with the pitch movement of the body at the join.

To fatten up the synth lead for the song "is This the Ending?", Speaker Honey uses OneKnob Phatter right after the Aphex Aural Exciter in order to scale up the low end, matching it to the newly added high end. OneKnob Pumper is also used in another video to create a sort of sidechain compressior feeling, ducking the audio at certain intervals.
