Mods and upgrades

  • Circuit bending on the PSR-48 involves experimenting with solder points to alter sounds, but risks damaging the digital chips if not done carefully.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The PSR-48 uses two main chips for sound generation, one for melodic voices and one for drums, limiting circuit bending options.

    Source

Yamaha PSR-48 Review by Stereo Ninja Music - Stereo Ninja Music

weebly.com

The Yamaha PSR-48 is a nostalgic piece from the 1990s, offering 61 keys, 100 voices, and MIDI connectivity. It charms with its variety of FM tones and the ability to layer voices, but its 8-note polyphony is a limiting factor. The lack of synth editing features and a flimsy pitch bend wheel at its original price point are drawbacks. While it functions well as a basic MIDI controller, its pre-General MIDI era quirks and non-transmitting drum pads limit its modern studio integration. Overall, it's a decent vintage find for enthusiasts, but not groundbreaking.

A gem

This thing is hilariously fun. Plug in midi and play some on-board songs while cycling through the arrangement buttons, playing fill and intro over and over, back to back, turning off and on the "instrument" groups. A wonderful way to spice up a track. If you ever find a cheesy yamaha keyboard with midi, pick it up!
