Jonny Buckland's Gear

From Matt McGinn, Jonny's guitar tech, through Coldplay's "Oracle" Q&A service:

"I can't remember where he picked it up - maybe Chicago? - but, if you're interested, it's a '72 Thinline from about 1974. It's half hollow - so, semi-semi acoustic, I guess - and has a lot of really nice gouges in it from being thoroughly thwacked. All still original, as far as I know. I reckon it must've cost him about 2000 US dollars but God knows what it'd be worth now. You can get a pretty good Fender copy/reissue these days for a lot less, off the peg, that might turn out lovely after a few years of playing it. That's the thing, any old guitar can be amazing if you love it enough."

Matt McGinn replies, "We do use Ernie Ball's too though, there doesn't seem to be much in it, tone or quality-wise. No color coding but each string comes in an individual envelope with a big number on it so you know the gauge."

Throughout this video Jonny can be seen playing his Vintage 1972 Fender Telecaster Thinline, that he acquired in 2002. Matt McGinn, Jonny's guitar technician answered a question about the guitar on the band's website in 2002. He said, "Well, that one (which is called 'Sunny' - they've all got names) is Jonny's total favourite. He's had it about ten years and has played it on most of the albums and tours since Rush Of Blood - it's actually the one he's holding if you look at the band photo from that album cover. There's just something about the two of them that seems to click. It sounds amazing, for a start. And he's really happy when he's playing it, as you might have noticed." Jonny still has and actively uses the guitar today.

From a Sound On Sound Magazine interview with Ken Nelson, on the recording of the album Parachutes:

Ken Nelson explains how he got around this problem: "Johnny has a Fender Twin Reverb, and he has all these delays going into it, and it was quite a delayed sort of sound, and I was thinking 'How am I going to get around that?' I just wanted to have the option of a bit more dryness. They had another Twin Reverb, a slightly different version, and I said 'What would be great would be if you could use both amps, one having all your delays going into it, and one that's completely dry,' because I'm not a great one for effects.
