why did gibson switch over to 300k pots?

I am really unable to find decent electronics books somehow. I'm sorry, if you know anything I can read, I can probably check if it's at the library or cheap enough to afford.

Anybody mind explaining what exactly are 300k pots are? I tried researching this and there's so much. A quick rundown would be nice :)

How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.

Here he is using the "up&down. half a bend method" most guys use but he's employing it with extreme precision and finesse.... in 10 years you will have it! Is it the start point you marked with Clapton blazing away?

Well, it starts when the camera is zoomed in on his hands. It's really mesmerizing, he has such control over his vibratos, it almost looks and sounds like he's trying to do so while in time, like a really fast tremolo effect that's still technically in time with the beat.

Not a very good explanation... Whatever, i'm sure you get the point.

Anyways, i'm still very new to a lot of stuff. I'm pretty sure you learned by ear, but do you happen to have any tips on all these techniques?

Edit: The B.B. King method is the most difficult thing because it's impossible for my hand to rotate like his :(

Jim, you

Jim did you see the clip? The one with Eric Clapton, where he's playing without a slide?

Jim, I think you derped.

Either that, or i'm tone deaf to a slide sound, but I see no slide in that live show.

Alright, looks like you guys won't answer that, too difficult.

My Guitar Pedals-which ones are keepers and which ones should I ditch?

I didn't get a chance to read everything so I might end up editing this reaponse later. If I missed anything, please do not hesitate to correct me, I take them well.

OK, so it looks like you're in a similar situation as myself so here's what I have to say on the matter. LESS IS MORE in terms of distortions and such. A Vox as well as perhaps one or two drives should get you there. Having an overdrive and a second dual drive is a bit too much, though, because when it comes to church music, you'll usually end up using a straight (possibly gainy) boost and an overdrive that can push. A stand-alone boost and compression can boost your clean boost to a light drive, and a harder overdrive to even a distortion (the Marshall compressor does this well). I say no to fuzz factory, church music never has any fuzz, and Zvex goes batshit insane wih their pedals which, in your case, isn't good. I hear Box of Rock is very good though.

In terms of modulations, keep it moderate. One pedal for a chorus, one for a tremolo, maybe even a phaser. The Boss phaser sounds less EVH and more... Well, just different, but you still get good sounds.

Delays and reverbs. If I were you, I'd get a Boss RV-3. There will be a lot of tweaking, but it's capable of general reverbs as well as delay-reverb combos that sound very spacey. In honesty, you don't need much if you want a small rig. I have a Pedaltrain 1, though, so I can put on a lot more, really I just like my reverbs and delays.

However, Jim's right. Use your ear, mate. And don't focus so much on trying to sound the greatest because that's not the whole point. You are there to praise God and help the congregation do the same.

Anyways, now I have to read more from this tiny phone. Again, please correct!

Edit: Is your tuner at the end? You using it as a mute? If not, you should put it at the front on bypass (if it does that).

Guitars of future past!

[This?}(http://equipboard.com/items/shergold-masquerader)? It looks really nice, but the Teisco looked more like a chunky hollow-body Les Paul.

Guitars of future past!

I see you are online :D

Do you remember what model it was?

Guitars of future past!

Have a friend in class who has a Teisco. Normally, the verdict is that Teisco guitars are the most hideous creations to have been brought upon this Earth. Like, there's normal SG's, and then there's this thing.

Anyways, it actually looks really cool. Some sort of single-cutaway that looks like a legitimate vintage guitar. It's got these fancy looking humbuckers, but it has a bunch of dead notes up the neck... Still sounds very nice.

Wait a second, this isn't obscure guitar reviews...

a giant thread about OD, Distortion and Fuzz!

You know, I'd been hearing a lot about this Deucetone Rat which has all the Rats in a dual drive pedal. Tried it? I'm sure they may have cleaned up the sound a bit.

Also, those rats are the subject of many modifications. JHS has their own, sounds really nice.

On Fender Bridges

Probably why the Troy signature is a lot more bassy. I like it a lot more, last thing I need is twang...

Well, $1300. I'll spend the next few days crying in a corner, then I will return to save up. Speaking of, what's this strat you're talking about? Just curiosity, I like seeing modified guitars.

On Fender Bridges

So I was just going about some videos when I came across a Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzmaster review, which was cool, then he said something, and I looked back at the Fender website, and it said this:

As specified by Troy Van Leeuwen himself, the Jazzmaster bridge on his signature model is designed with chrome-plated brass Mustang saddles.

Wouldn't this work out? I actually really like this guitar, has the same pickups but it sounds so much bassier in the demo than the 50's Jazzy. Also, i'm really digging that oxblood finish.

I was going to ask about this one song, and then I found the live video, and now I am so confused.

It definitely has that Animals as Leaders vibe going on with the thumping. Has anyone tried this?

pop guitarists

I tried looking up the guitarist for Florence + The Machine... one video, and it was just a fan meeting him at the airport. Yet, it's surprising how much the guitarists can change the sound in some pop music.

Your musician pet peeves

I sincerely apoligise, I just get these urges.

Jim, I think you misread. Either that, or I did. Bowie is influenced by Kanye, according to Kanye. Not the other way around where it is acceptable and validates your point about Gaga.

Kanye West claimed David Bowie was influence on him. I laughed so hard I nearly chucked milk on the TV

Your musician pet peeves

Anyone who knows absolutely nothing of how a guitar functions will give me this crap. Hell, my dad who loves classic rock and metal and worked at a Roland factory AND did sound tests and such doesn't understand the difference. However, he knows now.

As for Kanye, his ego may be disgustingly large, but no one can deny hos talent. It's pretty much a Bieber Effect. Pretty good at making music, but an ass when he's not on stage.

I have a pet peeve for sound engineers. We have one who, unfortunately, can be very lazy, or normal. On his lazy days, my acoustic is so low that I can't even hear it in the ear monitors with the volume maxed out. He actually used to just outright mute me, and I'd just stand there on stage pretending I'm actually contributing.

10yover 10 years ago

Your musician pet peeves

Sounds a lot better than the radio station here. We have ONE classic rock station.

ONE

AND IT DOESN'T EVEN PLAY CLASSIC ROCK, IT PLAYS 70'S AND 80'S POP.

We have two classical stations, actually quite nice at times, and the rest is pop, hip-hop, and rap AKA Top 40 bullshit. We have an alternative rock station, but it's a damn lottery. Once a blue moon, they will play a good song. Like Coldplay. From their new album...

By the way, if you hear Fox, aren't you on AM? That's where all the political yammer is in my area.

So, really, there's only one thing that can cause that reverb, but it just seems so strange to me. That is the signature Fender reverb effect, right? How?

Regarding renaming guitars as "Duplicate"...

My whole life is a lie...

10yover 10 years ago

On Fender Bridges

OK, I am joking, I've only reached 10's, and there's a big chance I'll settle on 11's because I feel as if 10's are almost, but not quite my size.

10yover 10 years ago

Regarding renaming guitars as "Duplicate"...

OK, as the sole reason for this thread, and seeing that there is an answer, I'd like to apologize, for the "Duplicate" thing, but Jim is right. We need an overhaul to fix all the duplicates.

However, Walrus also made a point about vintage instruments. A Fender Stratocaster from 1962 will sound nothing like that of a modern-day Strat, so that's something to consider when the overhaul occurs.

Having "Categories" in the wishlist and Owned equipboard.

Wow, that's three new users on one thread. Welcome, guys!

On the subject of categorising, I find it surprising that we can categorise the specific pedal type, but it only shows as a big list of pedals on the pro page.

So yes, I support this.

Identifying the gear

Going to take a look later. in the meantime, that's a Kyser Six-String Clamp Capo on the neck. I will get back to you on the Epiphone.

Keep in mind that Josh does have an excessive amount of vintage gear. We may. Ot find this model on the Epiphone website, so you'll have to dig deeper. Perhaps there are some old Epiphone catalogs?

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

This just happened to a whole bunch of submissions I had to rectify:

http://equipboard.com/pros/josh-klinghoffer/fender-1966-stratocaster-electric-guitar-duplicate?src=email

It's so much the fact that he is purposely changing an obviously incorrect submission to correct, but the fact that he doesn't even bother to reply. In my eyes, anyone who can make a rational case defense of a position is a well-respected individual in my eyes.

But Simon? No, he's an asshole until he speaks, and this is pretty much trolling.

Edit: Wow, wasn't expecting that to be honest, thanks guys. Now, we wait for a reply (if there is anyways).

I was going to say that I'd prefer to have a tremolo arm with my Jazzmaster. Maybe I'll just move to 12 gauge strings. I understand what you're saying about Mastery Bridges. When I do get my guitar... one day, I will perhaps follow this advice.

Identifying the gear

Yo, I said left, not right.

Oh, I'm sorry. Kinda funny story, but I have problems with left-right. I switch them a lot. Actually, the pedal you're looking for could be some kind of custom-made pedal, but this seems to me like a Klon KTR Overdrive pedal.

Correct! I put it on Brynjar's page.

As for the first image you linked, I see an Avalon U5 DI Preamplifier at the very top left, and an Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor which is second to bottom rack. The amplifier on the right is an Ashdown BTA 400 400-Watt Valve Bass Amplifier Head. I can't see the rest.

On the second image, well I'm better with Fender basses. The one on the left is a Fender Standard Precision Bass, and the one on the right is a Fender 50's Precision Bass (however, I could be wrong on that one). For the others, I can't find the proper Martin bass. And yes, it is impossible to find the maker of most classical instruments. I don't know about the ukulele either.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

I tried this the other day, but there seems to be no button that says submit. I'm trying to find a way to view the page like on a normal computer, but haven't yet.

Another thing, I suggest that we be able to edit a band page, it's annoying to see no picture and odd genres.

Haha, that was ages ago. I remember fiddling with that a little bit, I even had a copy of those AOL discs, but I'm sure it got thrown away. I'm surprised it still exists. AOL is kind of like Myspace at the moment: trying to look good and all, but they still can't contest with everyone else.

Just a suggestion, we probably shouldn't have edit histories in the comments, too much clutter. Best to keep it in the Edit Submission page.
