From a November 2011 article found on mesaboogie.com:

"The core of the preamp switching and FX integration happens via Mesa/Boogie Amp Switchers controlled with Digital Music Corp.’s GCX Expander switching units. The Boogie amps being switched are two Triaxis Preamp’s run into a 2:90 Power amp. One Triaxis is set to the Mark IIC+ mode while the second Triaxis is used for clean sounds in the Green Clean mode. Like Kirk, James also has DBX Quad gates and T.C. Electronic G Major FX Processors along with a few extra pedals kept in the rack. The signal runs out of the 2:90 into two Mesa Traditional Straight 4x12s for a true stereo mix." (original source: http://mesaboogie.com/news/2011/11/metallica-live-rigs/)

Back in the early 80's James Hetfield used a modified Marshall JMP 2203 (the amp which later became the JCM800 2203) he used this amplifier up until 1984 because it got stolen. After the amp got stolen, James bought a JCM800 2203 and had it modified.
These amplifiers can be seen on a lot of live footage of the early Metallica days as well as on the documentary "Some Kind Of Monster" You cab see the amplifier in this picture as well. https://www.flickr.com/photos/dyingindowney/2432208001

James Hetfield appears to use a modified Mesa/Boogie Stiletto Deuce Stage II head during performances of the National Anthem at various sports events, such as Giants, Sharks, or Warriors games. The amplifier's front panel is customized with team colors, and Hetfield's "JH" badge replaces the original Stiletto badge. Despite these modifications, the control layout remains consistent with a Stiletto head. This suggests its suitability for a single 4x12 live setup or possibly its tonal preference for these performances. A user-uploaded photo supports this observation.

Metallica producer Greg Fidelman has revealed that James Hetfield relied on a “legendary” Marshall head – modded by Eddie Van Halen’s amp guru José Arredondo – for almost every track on Metallica’s new album, 72 Seasons.

Fidelman is interviewed by Total Guitar as part of its huge cover feature on the metal legends’ new record and was responding to a prompt about the band’s more British-style tone on the record when he mentioned the guitar amp.

“James has always had one of the legendary José Arredondo-modded Marshalls, a late-’60s/early-’70s Superlead head,” says Fidelman.

“When we did Hardwired... [To Self Destruct in 2016] it wasn’t working very well. When we started this album, I had a re-invigorated interest in this head. I was talking with Dave Friedman, who is very familiar with those old José mods, and he fixed it.

“When I got it back, I told James I thought it sounded insane, and he got really excited about it. It ended up on every song. I think that’s what you’re hearing.”
