Ward began using a Blacktop HH Jazzmaster upon Sparta’s reformation in 2017, as confirmed in a 2020 Rig Rundown on Premier Guitar’s website

But as he says in the interview, he’s part of a “Fender family,” so his return to the Telecaster with Sparta and Sleepercar, and most recently with this Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster HH.

Guitarist Jim Ward of the band Sparta sent Epiphone this photo with his TV Yellow Limited Edition 50th Anniversary "1961" SG Special. The P-90 powered solidbody has become Jim's goto axe both on the road and in the studio. Jim had this to say, "I have enjoyed every single thing about my Epiphone '61 SG reissues. I have not only used them on the At the Drive-in tour this spring, but also on the new Sparta recording. I usually don't use the same guitars live and on record, but I am head-over-heels for this thing. Thanks again Epiphone."
