What's your basic studio setup?

... can still get a rich sound with this. People listening hear what you tell them to hear, NOT how expensive your gear is.

YES! the more gear you have to run stuff through, the more it is processed and is given a unique sound.

The same guy recording with your set up or with a pro studio will have more at his disposal in a studio... but he has to know how to use it first.. to get the most out of it.

Record and produce how you can. If you think the songs need more, after you are said and done and have committed your best work to the playing feel and recording, and your production is at the best it can be, speak to someone with better gear, see if they can use your recording or ask how much a session would be.

But for now... you have gear to record with... GO FOR IT.

cheap/simple bass rig

I used a Boss BF-2 because the Cure used them. (Guitar one... NOT a bass one!) This or the Ibanez Jim suggested... the Electric Mistress Electro Harmonix is too wild!

The Flanger or Phaser... (sounds a bit more rounded) just fill out the sound when you need it. I hate to recommend Boss... I know it isn't cool with the millions of other suppliers out there these days... but the suckers do not break.

Watch some vids if you like but beware! the sweet spot for most flangers is from 9 0'clock til about 2 o'clock. anything beyond that (in the video) and they are just messing with you! This extreme ranging will overpower what you are trying to do.

cheap/simple bass rig

I feel like I missed the boat on this post... a lot happens in 8 hours. I play garage rock primarily. Switched from guitar to bass but still do a lot of writing solo and love grabbing the bass still.

You want your bass to sound punchy... plenty of woof and a bit of bite... so an EQ pedal if you don't have an amp big enough to give a strong bass presence and a bright treble response also.

Too much mud loses the bass tone. Lemmy and Dinosaur Jr are strong advocates of Marshall guitar heads... but that is an expensive experiment. I use a Marshall Guv'nor as a bitey bass grit pedal... it doesn't mud up and punches through pretty hard. Maybe look at a marshall styled pedal... there are plenty about for dirt cheap in the Chinese brands that will give you a bit to work with.

I play through an old 70's solid state head into a cab with a single 18" in it. Gets over the drums and still gets the crowd in the chest.

Defs grab a tuner.

I use a flanger or a phaser on bass lines where I have room to get a bit arty.... you know... playing the higher registers with a bit of flair. But get them off down low and just punch on through.

But leave the delays and verbs to the guitars... as a bass player you are driving it... get your timing tight as a tiger and really work with the drummer.

Practice at home with songs, or a drum machine or metronome... they are free as an app now so just grab one.

Never quite got the octave pedal on a bass thing... the speakers just flub out.

Adding PRO feature down?

I have to be honest here. I use (and was initially drawn to this site) to see what musicians use to get their sound. It is an equipment site.

Christian music is not defined by what equipment they use. It is a record store category, a marketing beacon... the star in the record store that followers can flock to safely.

I agree with Jim and Boom here in equal parts. If a genre is defined by it's distinct sounds and tonal characteristics, it should be part of the Equipboard genres. Metal, lullaby, trance, thrash, polka, golden oldies.... these are definable genres that you can make a tangible auditory link to at the mere mention of them.

If you cannot make that solid tangible tonal link... not an Equipboard suitable genre.

New Trac.... rock, pop, hiphop, jungle, turntable WTF ROCK ASS SHIT HERE! my best work!

you doubted this song in this foirnat but.........

Not in this format. This is much more refined than the version you sent me. The one I heard was like pissing into the wind... All guns blazing and going everywhere at once and all in your face. You toned it down where it needed it and made it sound more genuinely original. Like I said, there are some real hero parts in this song, and they just needed their chance to shine. I like the scratch pad... nice transition device.

Three strongest brands for acoustic lovers in OZ are Martin, Maton and Cole Clark.... with Taylor tagging along.

Not sure if they blip on your radar.... or if they are too far out of price range.

Behringer to clone Minimoog?

Noticed he didn't hint at a durable one or a noiselessly functional one....

I understand the drive... to create entry level gear to help the struggling or budding musicians, but it is the slim margins and the target of mass production for any chance of survival that casts the reputation of the gear in a bad light.

AC30 emulator is my favourite guitar rig sound for all of my new stuff. If I could have that sound getting along with my Muff n stuff, I would be a happy man...

...but if I was happy I wouldn't be writing the depressing and angry stuff I write that is so full of crunchy bitey cleans and howling muff tones, which would make me sad...

... which would make me want the tones again....

Dammit Jim, why did you make me try and then fall in like with AC's????

I bought burgers for myself, my wife and daughter yesterday for more than that!

Maybe use it as kindling and Barbeque up some nice burgers...

Or smash it Cobain style... NEVERMIND.

Electric drum kit suggestions

All of these ones that you guys are suggesting are awesome kits! However, they all feature mesh pads. Marking them as higher Quality but more costly products. As this is essentially for a 12-year-old girl to be playing on, I am looking initially at a rubber pads kit but not the complete entry level… Just one step above should be enough to get her into usable territory. She does not need cymbal choke, But needs to be able to adjust the kit to her height and also be adjusted to my height snirk

CDs or Vinyl

Vinyl. When it comes to listening to music. This is your tube amp. Genuine and has feeling. Digital reproductions (cds and MP3) are solid state or emulators... they sound just fine UNTIL you have a tube amp.

another mystery genre song, AWESOME! HEARITBITCHES!

yeah... I have been re addressing the vocal approach for try. Currently working an octave higher, like "My Tumor" and "Fickle". I will flick through what I come up with of course.

Electric drum kit suggestions

This kinda fits in this section...

Looking for the "step up from entry level" electric kit. Wanting one that has adjustable snare positioning and a bit of variety in it's setup... e.g. moving hats from left side to right, but keeping the rest of the kit static...

any experiences... the "worth a shot" and the "walk on by" advices would be appreciated and taken on board.

another mystery genre song, AWESOME! HEARITBITCHES!

Honoured to be able to help. It's a great song and you should be proud of it.

To think that this was inspired by a gchiaren gif!!!

I suggested some pretty wacky stuff (on top of what was already your own pre-existing wacky stuff) and you took it on board and created a cool little piece.

Knowing (and understanding) your musical background and training, this must have been a bit confronting at times... you challenged yourself beyond comfort on this one and made a little piece of magic.

I think I need to dedicate one day a week during uni season to music... call it therapy if you will....

If I do, do you think you and xaqary can let me play along?

another mystery genre song, AWESOME! HEARITBITCHES!

particularly the acoustic... it is like the song was hurtling down the freeway then stopped short to let a busker cross the road...

But if that incorporated this WILD sweep that really grabbed at everything and drew it all along.. but the acoustic shouldn't just sound acoustic... the rest of the song is pure madness.... that wild extended bend F# that lurches into the main riff just gurgles with excitement...there is soo much going on... then that brilliant crack crack snare.... momentum achieved...ride the wave!

New mustang bass?

its my life's work to fill every inch of my house with guitars and synthesizers

.... and actually play them! Not be some hoarder that collects for the sake of collecting, denying every other player so many opportunites.

Big Joe has taken it too far. His collection sickens me when I see it, because it removes so many wonderful pieces from the world, to be holed up in his museum.

Such a waste of so many instruments... and for what?
