Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

My apologies to you Zach. As pointed out in the comments, I now find I am renowned for reaming people over small matters. This is something I was not conscious of, and something no one should have to tolerate. I retract all statements and wish I could retract any discomfort I suffered you. Enjoy the site.

Nope. Just tonight. Was a fantastic show.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

Apologies if this has been asked for before.... Can we have a "back arrow" for the first position item on our personal equipboards?

I have to add new items and drag them to the bottom, (because I have colour coded, and prefer certain items at the front). As I add new items, I push them all the way to the end for the most part.

Would love to add and back arrow once to the end of my list.

I would like to hear that and I wouldn't.

Ok, I'm off to bed. Daughter has swim titles tomorrow then going to see Dinosaur Jr at the end of my street.

It would be like Schrodinger's Greatest Hits. There are currently about 6 people worldwide who care about my music... I will whittle that down with the next batch of soundclouds....

Good Choices!

When considering covers, think of an artist you like, then choose the one song that the public... the people who say "I don't know... all like all types of music...hee hee" could recognise.

Maybe throw in something like a Radiohead Creep, or a cranberries zombie. Slower paced, to break tempo, Foo fighters something common. Cure or the cult. And throw a mad guitar solo into All I want is you by U2. Totally own it.

Congrats on the Grades!!! good work!

Not obscure... I just don't have the theoretical backing for what I do. By all measures, I am at best, an "enthusiastically passable" musician. I do what I do because I couldn't get anyone else to do it better than I felt it needed to be done.

And the feeling of being so confused by someone talking about something that you do... and that you had previously presumed you knew how to gravitate around, to such a stupefying degree that it triggers involuntary urination as a coping mechanism.... well, it leaves you feeling kinda erky and unpleasantly moistened.

Being exposed to this wealth of knowledge and understanding will make me a better person... but it comes with a wet sock discomfort that goes to 11.

Your Musical Evolution

I wouldn't.

There is no argument. You have a lifetime of classical training and theoretical understandings.

I am a wilder.

I put my fingers where they resonate the most favourable sound for me, and people will then tell me the aug or sus 4 or diminished that I have applied to some derivative.

Cool.

I just remember where I put my fingers for next time.

I do appreciate reading your knowledge. It can confuse the piss out of me. But I still learn so I am happy.

Your Musical Evolution

I am going to defend myself passively. I enjoy the lower tunings. They suit my voice better. I still prefer the tuning to follow the standard, but tuning the whole guitar that step/ half step lower. The drop aspect (drop D, Drop C#, Drop C) is to allow me a few differentiations on voicing. nothing world changing... just something I wanted to include.

Let's not consider what I am doing as gimmicky. Let's call it... Sub-capo application. A capo takes a sound higher, I want to go lower.

We can all only go as deep as our nuts. So make our nuts sound lower!

Create sections on your equipboard?

When you post an item to your page, you have the option to rank it and write a review of it, which is different to the artist pages, which instead ask where you have sourced your information from.

Your reviews can be upvoted by other forum users, and you earn Gear IQ points based on people appreciating your contribution.

Gear IQ is a system of 'cool points' to give contributors a sense of status and eventually place them on the council of elders (check that, may need verification).

I recently realised that the image associated with my guitar was incorrect so redid it and lost my cool points, even though I copied and pasted my review.

Losing cool might be too hard for a lot of contributors, so a major change could be a hassle.

At least jump somebody on that Cajon... Any percussive will help!

Get them a metronome app and a set of headphones or earbuds, agree to a tempo and have them beat along to that.

Worst guitars you have bought

This is going to sound like a dumb question. If someone didn't like the sound of a guitar, why buy it?

But the question is worst guitar you have bought. I will read this as LEAST FAVOURITE. This way I can comment... because I buy what I like and the rest stay on shelves.

My 1960's Coltone (Australian rebranding of Teisco)- Gear Porn pic #2 guitar #2 is a 3 pickup ET-310. It has it's own sound. Pickups are mounted to the top of the guitar, not dropped into a rout, so has that Gibson vibe, with a thick vintage "V" shaped neck profile. Tuner grips are plastic and regrettably I bought it without its Vibrato arm... which is essentially a flat bar screw mounted through a spring attached to a hinge system.

A unique sound, with three individual pickup selectors... one, two or three on at any given time... in any combo.

The reason I list it as least favourite is simply that it is not my go to guitar. It spend several years strung to an alternate tuning, but has come back to standard now (I don't play the 4 songs written for that tuning anymore).

Who knows? Maybe back in standard I will use her more...

9yover 9 years ago

Your Musical Evolution

I have messed with a few alt tunings. One guitar remained in F# F# F# F# E B (.042 .042 .024 .024. 018 .014) for over 10 years, But I got bored with it. I still favour drop D, or tuning all guitars a half step or a step down and possibly drop tuning from there. While the drop method is commonplace with heavy hitters, I use it for the melodics I get from open chords and the beauty within it played clean, or with some gentle modulation.

Pedalboard

I used to gaff pedals to the board. People used to get gear stolen at shows near me too regularly. I now use the links from bicycle chain, screw one side to the screws of the pedals, the other side I screw to the board. Ain't nobody stealing my gear!

I also rout out slots for exactly where patch leads and power need to come out and loop everything under the board cable tied neat and pedals positioned before I screw them down. (see gear porn pics 1 and 3 on my equipboard)

note: I got new gear so need to redesign my board. Want to keep the design but a MKII is coming soon.

20 years too late?

I am kinda special.

I don't have much keyboard/ electronica know how. I choose to get into MIDI when MIDI no longer uses MIDI cables and everything is USB... except my gear...

CRAP It feels like I and grandpa, and you are trying to teach me how to use an iPhone.

9yover 9 years ago

Your Musical Evolution

Absolutely it does! The whole reason I ask this is because I love hearing why and how people become musically interested in the first place, what directions they took... what music they listen to and how they progressed as they grew older/wiser/unwiser to get how and where they are now

9yover 9 years ago

20 years too late?

Just read up on CV/ Gate. This does not sound like the path I want. Monophonic only is the deal breaker. Do I need a MIDI in AND a midi out path from both devices? i.e two cables?

I have been able to have the SR drop midi patterns into Cubase, but the drum sounds did not follow. Instead it substituted a piano from its own library.

I want SR sounds and SR sequencing to play in Cubase at the exact same tempo.

Switching gear is not an option. Cash for next two years already spent.

First electric guitar

They were a fairly reliable Japanese made brand and the Tele was my only stage and recording guitar for many years.

It was stolen twice, and reclaimed both times. One time the perp even sanded back and scratched away at the headstock, removing the logo.

The guitarist from a band we used to share billing with dropped a Di'Marzio bridge pickup in her, and she knows how to scream and be sensible.

She was made I must assume during the timber shortage in the 80's when factories turned to different woods. She appears to be a form of ply (layers in cross section) but has a great sound and sustain.

I recently treated her to a facelift. Respraying the black body to now be a Charcoal metallic and matching the headstock, fitting all black hardware and applying an ebony stain to the rosewood fretboard. As a further point of difference, I fitted a pearlescent blue pickguard.

Bought it for $60. $50 worth of refit/ respray.

Love this guitar.

Starting a Band in a SHIT Town???

HMV: His Masters Voice. Decent, but commercial record store chain. It died.

Do you have Facebook?

Gone are the days of hand drawn mini posters that you photocopy 50 times and sticky tape to every telephone pole in a 3 minute radius...

Start a page on facebook called "[insert name of your shit town] Teen Music Scene".... e.g. "Wexford Music Scene" and invite all your friends. If you make it a closed group, you (as admin) get to choose who can join the page, but leaving it public may get trolls from out of town or overseas.

Talk about bands you like, share youtube clips. From there, talk to people you share musical interests with, find like minded musicians and discuss places where you could rehearse, play etc. Maybe someone's dad [or mom] is an ex muso, or has a factory/ barn/ media room and knows a way to get excited group of teen musicians out of the bedrooms and into the light.

We used to hope enough people would find our little posters and play to rooms of 20 - 30 people.

We have all heard stories of Teenage Facebook advertised parties that go viral in big towns with hundreds of people storming them.

Not really bad exposure...

Don't wait for the music scene to hopefully or miraculously change around you. Be the change.

20 years too late?

Hey gang,

Wonder if anyone can give me a dumbed down answer?

I am running Cubase and have been trying to record from my old but still loved Alesis SR-16 Drum machine, but 88BPM on SR is not 88BPM on the DAW... which sounds dumb to my brain. 88 beats per minute should mean that you will be exposed to 88 beats in a minute.

The SR tempo recognises whole numbers only, but DAW allows to 3 decimal places!!!

What should I be doing to get the DAW and the SR talking the same tempo? I cannot get clocks to align and have to adjust Cubase by ear. This results in an 88BPM track on SR clocking in at (eg) 85.68BPM on the DAW. Having to manually adjust the tempo of the track before I record ANY other instrument is a painstakingly laborious task and is slowing my spontaneous recording opportunities horrifically.

How do I set up so that the DAW dictates the tempo and the SR conforms? OR, should I be letting the whole number only SR dictate tempo to the DAW? I have tried a few things and cannot make anything work. I want to be able to still use the sequencing / programming of the SR and run the tracks and songs I have programmed into it. It is the piece of kit I am most familiar with and love how it works.

For some reason, I only own one MIDI cable. Do I need a second?

I am primarily a guitarist. I don't live and breathe MIDI. I am running through a Komplete Audio 6 which has a MIDI in and out, and the SR has in and out/ thru.

KA6 https://www.native-instruments.com/typo3temp/pics/img-ce-komplete_audio_6_overview_02_connectivity_2x-e9a2e3ab818ce6ce36509257c8cb1b18-d.jpg

First Amplifier

Jade Monarch 25 Can only find

online image. Similar but all black, with a circular grille made of steel.

I asked my dad to buy me picks one day as he went to work and gave him $2. (they were $0.50 each at the time). When he got home that night, I asked for the picks and he said "go get them out of the van". I opened the van to find a bag with $30 worth of guitar picks and this amplifier. I gues sthey were getting sick of me running guitar and bass through the hi-fi system! The Jade Monarch 25 is an Australian built 25w amp marked as a Guitar /bass/ keyboard combo. Mine survived being left outside in a rainstorm overnight when I was drunk, has been a guitar amp, bass amp, keyboard amp, vocal rehearsal amp, drum machine amp and makeshift monitor for days of 4 track recording. bought in 87 it finally died in 2013, when earth leakage at a factory we rehearse at shorted a laney, a randall a fender rumble and it, while my other amps were in the shop. The damage has fried every pot and shattered the board at every solder point. When attempting to repair, it was revealed the speaker was torn as well. Cost to repair is $150 which I will do as my father passed away some years ago.
