Yngwie Malmsteen's Gear
A DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 is part of Yngwie Malmsteen's tour guitar rig. According to the diagram in a March 2001 issue of Guitar One magazine, his pedal drawer includes the DOD Overdrive Preamp 250.
"My sound is the overdrive...and the gate," Malmsteen says in this Premier Guitar interview at (5:40) as he shows us his Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor pedal.
You can see which effect pedals the Maestro use, on live stage.
Yngwie Malmsteen shows us his signature Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster. According to Malmsteen, the guitar sports "YJM Fury Pickups by Seymour Duncan, and they're just amazing," he said at (0:55). "These really scream." The guitar has a "scalloped neck, of course, with the Dunlop frets, brass nut, standard tremelo" Malmsteen said.
In the YouTube video titled "Yngwie Malmsteen Picking Technique," Yngwie Malmsteen discusses his use of the Dunlop Yngwie Malmsteen Custom Delrin 1.5mm Guitar Picks in white. He describes the pick as very stiff, noting that Dunlop customized it by adding his name and changing its color to white.
Yngwie used Fender Roc Pro 1000 heads and combos for several of his live symphonic performances and accompanying records, as well as his "Play Loud" instructional videos, in 1998 - 1999. Interviews where he talked about these amps are tough to find, but at the time he said that their volume and treble response were more controllable than his Marshalls (but with similar tone) which made them better for small spaces and for playing with a symphony.
In this photo of Malmsteen's collection we can see what appears to be a Gibson SG in a White finish in the upper-right corner.
Malmsteen breifly stated in an interview that this is a "'66 dot-neck SG" that he bought in his home country of Sweden.
Malmsteen's onstage setup also includes a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face, seen in this Premier Guitar video at (6:10), but he doesn't use it. "I just like the way it looks," he said. "It looks like a landmine."
"We have also Fender Yngwie Malmsteen strings. I've used these for quite some time now, but now Fender has officialy put my name on it. It's a diffrent kind of gauge than you normally buy. It's very, very good. (...) The only string I will play, by far."
In this video at 5:45 Malmsteen states "I got some V's, I got a V that years ago I had its scalloped and put Strat pickups in it... Yeah and uh, put a Tremolo on it too... Yeah that was years ago they did that..."
According to Vintage Guitar, Malmsteen used a Flying V between 1986 and 1990.

Find it on:
I’ve used Fender Super Bullets for years now. I use a strange gauge .008, .011, .014, .026, .036, .048. Throughout the years, I found that if the wound strings are too thin, it really affects the sound and you dont get that massive thick sound. But the high strings never sound better when theyre thicker. The action on my guitars is very very high. Everybody thinks that since I’m playing those fast things, the action is low. But that is what I think makes the guitar sing not the thickness of the strings because it allows it to breathe more. I always tune my guitar a half step down, except for the jam in G3. For that, I was in standard tuning.
Some of Malmsteen's guitar amps are Vintage Marshall JMP Mark II Superleads, according to the guitarist in this Premier Guitar interview. "There are only two manmade objects you can actually see from outer space," Malmsteen said at (3:30). "One is the Wall of China, one is the Yngwie Malmsteen wall of Marshalls. And today, we are gracing the stage with nine stacks with three heads on each one."
Malmsteen also plays through his signature Marshall head, as seen in this Premier Guitar interview at (4:20). His cabinets are also custom made to go with the head. "All of these are filled with 75 Celestions," Malmsteen said, and all the amps are switchable between 50 and 100 watts.
In this video at 4:43 Malmsteen states "...I got a guitar that Steve Vai gave me, here an old Steve... [indiscernible] very good friend of mine... And I gave him one of my guitars, we're all good friends and stuff..."
The message on the back of the guitar reads:
"To Yngwie J. you are greatness But more than that, a [indiscernible]! we had [indiscernible], ay mate? Steve G3-03"
In this video at 4:42 malmsteen states "I got a guitar Brian May gave me..."
In this photo of his guitar collection, you can see left handed Fender Stratocaster.
Malmsteen uses a Boss CE-5 chorus pedal, as seen in this Premier Guitar interview at (5:40). "If I play clean, I usually have [the chorus] on," he said.
In the image, Yngwie Malmsteen's amplifier setup includes a Marshall JCM 2000 Dual Super Lead, positioned second from the left.
Malmsteen's famous '72 Fender Stratocaster dubbed by fans as "Play Loud" due to a sticker the guitar once wore or "The Duck" due to its yellow finish and Donald Duck sticker on the Headstock, has come to be associated with Malmsteen as his go-to guitar rig. Malmsteen has used this guitar throughout his musical career and has had fender make several copies of it.
Malmsteen prefered the 70's headstocks because he claims they have more sustain. He also modified his Stratocaster by converting the neck from a 3-Bolt to a 4-Bolt (if needed) refretting the neck with Dunlop 6000 fretwire, installing Wilkinson Tremolo Springs adding a brass nut, removing the middle String Tree, installing DiMarzio HS3 Single Coil guitar pickups and most famously Scalloping the fretboard.
Fender honered Malmsteen by making a signature model based on this guitar.
In this diagram made by Boss, the Boss CS-3 compression pedal is visible.
Malmsteen plays with a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah Pedal, as seen in this Premier Guitar interview at (5:50).
In this video, Yngwie Malmsteen was spotted with a pair of KRK Rokit G3 studio monitors.

From a diagram in a March 2001 issue of Guitar One magazine detailing Yngwie Malmsteen's live gear setup during his 2000 Nov./Dec. USA tour with Dio, his on-stage gear includes the Roland PK5 Dynamic MIDI Pedal.
In this video, Yngwie Malmsteen says, "One of the most important things... they're all important but this is super important... something I developed with Fender... very particular one it's called an Overdrive Pedal thats what gives that... (plays) big sustain you know and everything... it's very liquid sounding, very powerful sounding, and it's not fuzzy, it's just perfect you need to try it out, the Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive Pedal by Fender."
In this image Yngwie Malmsteen can be seen holding this guitar.
At 2:06 we can see on the left of Malmsteen, the JVM410H is in the 5 stack of amps and it is the 3rd from the top. This concert was played in Monterrey, Mexico and was filmed in February 2020.
In this image, Yngwie can be seen holding a ESP Random Star.
