Alexi Laiho
Alexi Laiho's Gear
Alexi Laiho used Jackson guitars in the late 90s until they were stolen in 2003. Among his collection was a 24-fret custom shop RR with a "Wildchild" sticker and another "Stone" RR with white pinstripes. The black RR with green pinstripes, often seen on tour with a taped headstock, is believed to have been borrowed from Roope Latvala, with rumors suggesting the neck broke during a tour. However, there is no concrete evidence of Laiho using the Jackson RR 2073.
The RR 2073 was originally a custom order by Roope Latvala, featuring 22 frets. It was reportedly sold to a Finnish guitarist, as detailed on Jackson Guitar Palace's website. The RR 2074, another custom shop model with similar specifications, was allegedly sold to Laiho by Jiri Jalkanen, but no verified images or evidence exist of Laiho playing it.
Alexi has stated his pick of choice in several interviews and demos. This is just one example (0:53 into the video), taken from his set of instructive DVDs for Rock House Method titled "Melodic Speed Shred & Metal Guitar". Here he can be heard saying "I use the Jim Dunlop Jazz III with the sharp tip, which is a cool thing; affects in the sound, it makes it more mean, and affects in my fast picking a lot, too, it makes it more accurate".
Alexi Laiho, guitarist and frontman for Bodom After Midnight, recently took delivery of two new guitars made for him at the ESP Custom Shop in Tokyo, Japan. Both of the new guitars are based on the same guitar shape that Alexi has used for his ESP and LTD Signature Series guitars. Alexi is seen above receiving one of the two new guitars from Finnish ESP distributor Musamaailma Oy.
Both of Alexi's new ESP Customs are in Purple Fade finish. One of them features the same single pickup design with similar dual-pinstriping as seen in his previous and current Signature Series models.
The second ESP Custom that Alexi had us build offers a few variations. One is the irregular striping design that is unique to this custom guitar. Alexi also added a second pickup in this guitar, with an EMG single coil in the neck position accessed with a selector switch, and the guitar also features a scalloped fingerboard in the top five frets. Like Alexi's other ESP signature guitars, both models use neck-thru-body construction, and include a Floyd Rose Original bridge, an ESP MM-04 Active Boost Switch, and sawtooth fingerboard inlays.
In the 1997 live performance of Children of Bodom at Tavastia, as seen on YouTube, Alexi Laiho played an Ibanez RG550 with a maple fingerboard. He initially used this guitar, alongside a Jackson Custom Shop model purchased from Jiri of the Finnish band Stone, to record Children of Bodom's debut album, "Something Wild." Although he later transitioned to using Jackson guitars exclusively, two of his Jacksons were eventually stolen.

Alexi Laiho is associated with the ESP Alexi Katakana guitar, initially produced in a limited run of ten for the Finnish market and now available in a standard version. The guitar is notable for its black finish with yellow pinstripes, pearl sawtooth inlays on frets 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9, and a unique katakana inlay on the 12th fret spelling "Alexi." It features gold hardware and a larger cutaway, with frets 21–24 being scalloped. The source photo on PhotoBucket showcases this distinct model.
