Gear Purchases

I've been eyeballing the Ampeg SVT-CL Heritage. I did a lot of reading over comparisons between the Heritage version and the regular (which is $600 difference for same amp). Though I would normally just go with the cheaper clone, in this case it seems the more expensive version has way less returns, complaints, repairs, and retains its value more online. I've also read that the higher end valves the heritage uses come out to about $400, so you really are only paying $200 bucks for thicker copper, wiring, and circuit-boards.

If I spend the money to get this head, I will have to downgrade some o fmy gear. There's just no need to have multiple setups. My current available rigs are

  1. LH1000 Rack with 2 sansamps, Korg Pitchblack, DBX 160A, Furman

  2. Fender Rumble 500

  3. (Old Fender I use at the church)

The Fender rumble was supposed to be my quick and easy option for a portable gigging rig and the LH1000 was my at home, smooth as f*%& practice/recording amp. If I got the Ampeg, it would be my main practice and gigging amp. I think if I do this, I will sell the whole rack with exception of the LH1000 and just keep it as a backup amp. I just got the Fender Rumble this year, so I don't feel it's wise to sell it already.

Are double bass and cello strings flats or rounds?

Wich Headphones shall I get for producing?

Here's another throw for Speakers. I use JBL's and the sound is so realistic, a doorbell can ring in a TV show and I will think it was my doorbell.

If protecting your hearing is of no concern, you need to get some custom made Westone, Dual Driver in-ear monitors. They are great, won't fall out, and allow so much more volume and clarity. The days of a DJ holding a lunchbox sized earmuff up to his ear while his mixes are over. In ear monitors are professional and worth ever bit of cost.

I got mine for about $300 after getting my ears molded at a local hearing aid shop.

I was told I had all those things when I was young. ADD, ADHD, Bi-Polar, Hyperactivity, etc. I believed I had them all even though as an adult people begged to differ. I ended up being in a long relationship with a PhD counselor and she flat out proved to me I did not have these things. I was just an asshole kid that went through a lot of abuse and hated the world for it.

I DO however feel that my concentration breaks more often than it should. They say the mind is only capable of thinking on one topic for 8 seconds at a time. I feel like I'm closer to 5.

How I overcome this with school is simple. When I do study, I have to do other things with it. Generally I have to write down the material to force my mind on it and read it to myself while writing. This helps. I also take many breaks. I study a page, I watch a 3 minute YouTube video. I read another, I read a forum page. I keep breaking it up so that I'm not just fighting myself to concentrate.

Off topic of our off topic conversation, but are you Church of England by chance? I only this semester really learned about that denomination in history class.

I think it would. There is a sweetness to it which may go over his head this early, but there is actions, lots of slapstick jokes, and as stated, it's really pretty and bright.

The only part that may drive you nuts is when The Rock starts singing. He's a bit flat and they didn't fix his voice for some reason. Story is cool though. Made me wonder if it's actual Hawaiian/Samoan lore.

I watched it a few days ago or more. I dunno, it just went well. The animation is some of their best, the bright colors are a welcome sight after so many movies trying to be dark and colorless, and the story was fun. I don't think any hit songs with come from it, but it was well done.

There's even a twist I was expecting at the end.

I only just now looked at that thread and still feel I won't ever read it. I avoided it because I didn't feel like reading on mixing issues and then by chance I clicked it and regretted it.

Your kid is 3 now right? Terrible twos over. Give him a shovel, tell him it's minecraft, and have him dig you a swimming pool.

Why does my mix sound unprofessional?

This is the first time I've clicked this thread and... I... sigh

I can't read this :) I skimmed through it a bit and I can appreciate both sides, but perhaps it would have been best conversed in off-topic or it's own thread?

Nostalgic Music

I've got two that go hand in hand.

Intro Theme for "The Legend of Zelda"

Between the ages of 3 and 4, I spent my time either playing in the creek of my apartments, watching VHS tapes from my dad's movie collection, or playing NES. I remember spending about as much time just listening to the music and letting it play for long periods of time as I did actually playing games. This one in particular can still give me goosebumps. I used to stick my ear up against the speaker of the TV and let those leaping bass notes do their damage to my eardrum. This music was the first time I remember hearing harmonies that off-set each other slightly. I didn't know WHAT it was, but I knew I liked it and it made me feel powerful and centered. The way the first high melody plays almost sheepishly and in a shy way only to be shadowed by another sheepish and small, but deeper melody for a few measures before coming together and making one strong, epic unit of music. As a kid, it just gave me a soul boner, but as an adult, I find that it perfectly complements the idea behind the game. You start off as a weak, pennyless, unarmed elf boy, but as you gather items, weapons, and the triforce pieces, you become stronger and more able to do what must be done. I didn't know anything about music, but I felt like the music was somehow a piece of me. Like when I was created, the music was there with me already. The game itself came out in 1986 and both my parents played the Nintendo that was in my room, so I imagine I heard this music a lot before even having memories.

This next one you will want to listen to from start until 1:30 in... as the first three songs are all great.

Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest OST

This was yet another game where I would start the game, just to let it play in the background. The music and the scenery are perfectly harmonized into a Gothic architecture. I grew up on horror films and this game was the first one I was ever exposed to that felt familiar as a horror genre. The soundtrack goes through slow and creeping tunes, to fast and energizing ones. If the bass isn't going fast, the keyboard/guitar parts are. The sound effects to this game are programmed into my phone as ringtones and texts; have been for years, and I am still not tired of the music. The faster beats in this soundtrack inspired me to rock my jaw from side to side with the notes to make a sort of drumming effects in my head. I had no real way of expressing my love of music yet at this time except for singing specials for churches, which did not give me the same sort of high this other music did.

I have a question and instead of searching the interwebs, I decided I will allow you all to feed me the information like a child in a high-chair.

Isolated tracks, master tracks, and etc, like the ones posted in the nostalgia section have always been a bit of a mystery to me. I use them when I can to learn new music, but how does one get that? Can you get the isolated bass track of any piece of music or does the artist have to release a special version that can be dissected through Skynet?

Nostalgic Music

What songs or music "do it" for you on a nostalgic level? What songs bring you back a decade or two, be it good or bad times? List the music, post a video, and tell a little bit about where it takes you.

I shall start.

No Rain - Blind Melon

1992-1993. The end of 1st grade and the beginning of second for me. My mother had been moving me and herself around a lot for a couple of years after she divorced my dad. I was living in the second to last place I would in Abilene before moving out West. It was this crumbling little trailer park on the outskirts of town. The trailer was packed out with roaches but I don't have much else to complain about the actual trailer. The trailer park was filled with really scummy people. I was friends with the rebel of the park, a 6th grader named Johnny who had a blonde rat tail, a tattoo, and a love of hip-hop and rap. Johnny smoked and with all this together, he just seemed dangerous as all hell and I admired him for it.

The few other kids we hung around in the park all had something horrible going on with their home life. You would hang out with them for a while and then some secret would come out about some sort of abuse, neglect, or whatnot. This park was bad, and even now when I occasionally drive passed the place when visiting family, it looks like a frightening place to live.

It doesn't make sense to me, but all this is a good memory for me. There was bad all around, but I don't remember having complaints at this point in life. When I hear this song, it always calms me and takes me to a point where I had no complaints. In fact, I don't remember having any real problems yet in life, and maybe this was the last time for that this was true. Maybe, it's a memory of the last relative innocence I had. At any rate, I still love hearing this song, and I'm always reminded of of how many firsts I was experiencing at that time. Beavis and Butthead, Power Rangers, meth. I'm joking about the meth, but the others were there.

I've felt the need to go out and do something charitable, but I have not decided what. I want to do it on Christmas Eve perhaps. I have ideas, but I really want to give at least one person a break. I don't want to give money to a group of people to decide how to spend it on the needy, I don't want to buy toys or un-needed things for people, I also don't want to get myself in trouble/danger either. I had thought about looking for someone who is in need and has kids, and setting them up with a hotel room, some new clothes, and a laptop so they can contact family or look for a job, but I don't know if that is what would be a game changer for them. I've been pondering this for a couple of weeks.

Texas's view of the good life depends on which city you are closest to and who you are with. We have our cigar and sherry people here, but they are more likely to be found near Dallas, Austin, and the coast.

Poorer people tend to grill a lot and drink beer together in backyards and garages.

I am a romantic for the dying Old West. Sitting in a wooden rocking chair on a ranch porch and hearing the hollow ocean-like roar of the chair's bottom rolling over the untreated wooden floor and breaking the silence that would otherwise feel so large at times your breath feels like it hits a wall right in front of you. A long, hot day of horrible sweaty work finally coming to an end, the sky turning purple and orange as the sun hides itself behind a few hills, and the smell of a fire cooking a mass amount of calories and fats and knowing that the person cooking it is pouring out their soul and memories into pots and pans. When your body feels swollen and sore, the taste of any stiff drink is the greatest one you have ever had. It's rare to see a cigar pulled from a pocket and even rarer to see a loaded pipe anymore. I miss seeing stars.

I'm fixin' to go get that Bodegas sherry if the local store has it. I've been craving beef all day too. I think I'm going to grab some ribs or my new favorite cut, the, "Poor Man's Fillet" otherwise known as the Southwest Griller. I found one the other day for cheap and brought it home. Equipment I Once Had

Do it Jim.

I will say this, I think our equipboards could use some sections, the way an artist's is. Have all the microphones in one section, all the guitars in another.

I also think maybe we could split the artists' pages into "Current rig" and "Previously used". A lot fo bands switch up gear everytime they make a new album. It would make sense from a fan standpoint to come to the site and be looking for a certain item or setup based on what they just heard on the new album. I think we discussed this before, like adding album coverart icons over the items used for that item... but I'm just too lazy to go and find it without the new and improved, patented forum searchbar :p

9yover 9 years ago

Equipment I Once Had

Yes indeed. I believe every Jim owned guitar should appear on Jim's page.

9yover 9 years ago

Equipment I Once Had

i WOULD SAY IT STILL GOES ON YOUR BOARD, BUT THAT'S MY OPINION. Damn caps. If an artist or user used a Gibson Explorer for a record or song or whatsit, that item doesn't just not exist anymore. You can't un-record the album and replace the guitar with another one. Think about Dimebag, he is dead and technically his brother and wife own all wife guitars. We don't just erase them from his :)

9yover 9 years ago

Equipment I Once Had

I meant on just on the board, not actually getting rid of gear in real life, but deleting it or not adding to your board out of not owning it anymore.

9yover 9 years ago

Equipment I Once Had

I don't see why anyone would want to get rid of gear they once had. We don't do that with artists.
