Can I incorporate a bass cab with my guitar cab

Alrighty then... picture this if you will...

Adam plays with his signal coming out to 3 amps. A Marshall, an older model Diezel Super Bass VH4 and a newer model 100W VH4 Diezel.

He has his new Diezel running into the Mesa vintage 2x15 and his older BlueFace model running into a Mesa guitar 410 cabinet.

So all you really need is 3 amps and you're set :)

If the impedance is the same, I don't see it being a problem to have a guitar 410 and a bass 410 running into the same Head.

Best Bass For Metal

For the types of bands you like, I would suggest a Spector 5 Legend. They are 35 inch scale, which you will need when you downtune like a mofo. They have a cool signature growl and are built well. You might not even notice the difference between a Euro LX for example, which runs 1500+ from the Legend.

Spector Legends run about 800 new, but can be found for 4-500.

I upgraded mine and I would suggest you do the same. I bought 2 EMG 40DCX pickups and hooked them up with the EMG BQC preamp. It's an 18v system ideally so you will want to add a double battery box and the cavity will need some modding to fit the preamp in. This system comes to $350 all together I think. I also added a brass nut to add depth. Get the action super low, maybe even use a shim, and you are in business sir with a killer bass. It's one of the two basses I have that sound guys cream their jeans over. I was trying to make my cheap bass sound like Alex Webster's $4,000 bass. It worked well. I think my bass has more umpf than his does truly.

If you don't want to do any customizing, the supposed "winner" of the "Best Bass for Metal" joke was an Ibanez 405. I don't see why though. It's 34 inch scale, it looks very generic, it has limited tone shaping capabilities. I don't get it. I really am not a super fan of Ibanez tones. I've own several myself and played on some really high end ones. They have sort of sound the same to me, and the signature sound is not as impressive to my ears. Very flat sounding.

You will really need to just get your hands on several models of bass and see which neck feels the best for you. Good metal is all about speed and accuracy. Getting a bass that has a neck that is hard for you to travel around on will only set you back.

My best bass is a custom Carvin made from their "Bass Kit BK50A" and some carvin upgraded parts. It has 2 Jazz pups and 1 MM style humbucker that is a nordstram. Even in passive mode, which I normally hate, it is satisfying to play. Here's the specs for my custom bass.

Specs:

Scale: 34" Spacing: 19mm Body Wood: Walnut Neck Wood: Walnut Finish: Tung oil Fredboard: Ebony Frets: STRF - Stainless Steel Regular Frets .043" H .080" W Pickups: 2 J99A pickups and 1 Nordstrand MM5.2 Preamp: Carvin 2 Band, 18V Knobs: V(push/pull active/passive),V,V, t/b, mini-toggle for MM5.2 (series/parallel/single)

I don't see the point in that. The aged wood of an old guitar is part of why it sounds good.

Starting a Band in a SHIT Town???

I think you should JOIN a band that gets a lot of gigs and plays what the locals like. It'll earn you a lot of experience and reputation. In a year or so, I would see about starting a different band with a different genre if you wish. However, if the local town doesn't have many people who like metal, you wont get many gigs.

Best Bass For Metal

A friend of mine is a guitar player, who is playing bass in a metal band. He has that same bass and loves it. I've not seen it in person yet though.

What KIND of metal do you want to play? This will help me figure out what tone you are wanting and what features you will need on the bass.

If you wanted to go for an old school NWOBHM like Judas Priest, Iron Miaden, and Black Sabbath... I would say to get a 5 string Precision bass with a jazz neck, of any brand you wish.

If you want more Lamb of God, Cannibal Corpse, Meshugah... I'd say to go for something with growl like a Warwick or a Spector. 5 string of course. The day has come where too many songs need a B or an A. There's just no point in buying 4 strings anymore.

Thrash like Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer leave you needing a lot of peaked mids. I'd say Jacksons, Fenders, and even some Ibanezes.

So... what are you into?

Best strings for an sg

Generally, the strings with the most hype have disappointed me the most. I'm still looking for those perfect strings. The next ones I'm going to try out are Dunlop Stainless Steel Super Bright 40/120 5 string set. I bought a custom bass that was put together mostly from a Carvin Bass Kit. The owner did not remember what strings he last put on the bass and claimed he thought they were the strings that came with the kit. We will see someday.

I can tell you this from my experience.

Mediocre Strings

La Bellas, Ernie Ball Power Slinky, DR Marcus Millers, D'Addario XL Flex Steels

Most Disappointing

DR Hi-Beams, Blue Steels, Elixer Bronze, DR Red Devils

I can't believe this one isn't on here yet.

Phil Anselmo

The guy is such a low life, shit talking, white-trash loser. Many people blame him for the death of Dimebag, and this last year he was seen giving a Zeig Heil on stage which made other bands like Machine Head refuse to have any contact with him again. He's barely able to sing the songs that were written for him and he has the attitude that he's some legend. No. Pantera became famous due to the Abbot brothers mostly.

I would go with the pedatrain just because I find the other ugly.

Why not get two pedalboards? You could have one for effects barely messed with and another board for all your volume and switching pedals.

OFF TOPIC

I learned something today.

A lot of people enjoy the access to a direct master track of different musicians, but you cannot get EVERYONE's master tracks. I had wondered why people don't just go to concerts with a wireless pack of the same brand the artists use, and have it go straight into a recorder from the audience. This way, with a little bit of a gear tucked under the manlies, you could say get just the bass parts of Justin Chancellor recorded during a Tool show and upload it.

I found out today why this won't work.

AIDS.

That and encryption. I didn't realize that the wireless packs send out an encrypted signal that only their receiver will pick up. You might be able to find someone who forgets to have the encryption, but it's likely such a common feature that everyone has it on.

Well, I got my wish. I was still planning on driving around tomorrow and seeing if I could meet some people in need, but I ended up getting a phone call from my dad around 11pm. He and his wife are going to church tomorrow (of course, he's an assistant pastor) and then heading downtown to serve food and such. He said his church is one of the few that are holding services tomorrow in Abilene. That's weird to me because, Christmas is the championed holiday, second only to Easter. Why wouldn't they hold services on a big day like this?

I've never been to his church during a service before, so this trip will get a few birds with one stone. I'm glad for the opportunity because Christmas alone is boring as hell ya'll.

HELP! my amp collection isn't making my penis any bigger no matter how loud I play!

Lubbock has a very high AIDS rate right now. Texas Tech was already well known for having one of the highest STD rates of a university in the country with their aptly named, "Raider Rash", which is a combination of STI's. A couple year back, one of the highly intelligent fraternities here decided to buy hookers for one of their parties. The girls charged more of unprotected encounters, but that didn't stop the college guys. Many of them picked up HIV, and then spread it to girls at school. It took them about a year to figure out what was happening and where it came from, but they finally got a story that lined up.

I'm a clean guy. I get basses that have a natural growl, boost the preamp on them, and use the amps just to heighten the volume of them.

I am a bit worried about the SVT though. I've been watching a lot of youtube videos where people are saying they got their defective. Either jacked tubes from factory, buzzing, or power issues. I'm wondering if new ampegs are low quality.

Your Musical Evolution

Zane gave himself the stage name of N'Zane when he played for the Jagermeister band, Negative 263.

Part 2:

Waiting To Exhale

That one black tape inspired such a love for Metallica. I didn't care at the time that they might have had other albums, or that they would go on to make more. I just wanted my black album. My mother and I would end up staying the majority of my childhood in Alpine, six hours away from my grandparents, aunts, and uncles. I practically grew up on the highway. Nearly every two weeks we would take a trip back to Abilene to visit family. Alpine is a small town with very few options in the way of entertainment. We had two radio stations. One was the main FM station which featured country music and daily announcements and the lonely and often fuzzy AM station which played old westerns and show tunes. I remember hearing, "16 tons, What do'ya get? Another day older and deeper in debt..." on that station. If we didn't travel to family, we would still travel to Midland/Odessa or El Paso, 3 hours in either case, to watch the latest movies and visit friends.

These many hours on the road were both a bonding experience for me and my mother, as well as an opportunity for us to rock out to music. I had my single black album tape and this would eventually lead to my mom enjoying Metallica... just this album anyway. However, my mom would bring her own feminine taste. She had joined that BGM music service at one point. You know the one. "Get 10 CD's/Tapes for just a penny each!". She would play her music on her turn and I had no choice but to listen, and listen I did. Ace of Bass, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilara, Ru Paul, Selina, and soundtracks to movies that featured any of these artists; her favorite being the "Waiting to Exhale" album. She loved that album and she loved the movie. She was the type of woman who had to pin each character in a film to someone she knew personally. Every movie we watched had SOMEONE in it that would cause her to laugh or cry, tap me on the arm, and tell me, "That's you. You do that. You're that guy". This movie she seemed to really identify with the single mother. Occasionally, she would want to listen to something from her childhood, and this is how I was introduced to The Eagles, E.L.O., and Creedance Clearwater Revival.

The rule of the road was that we could listen to our music, once through a single album. Once we ended up getting a CD player, I would steal the CD's that I enjoyed the most. ELO and Ace of Bass were two that I remember. I used to know every word to every song on "The Sign." I tested my memory a year or so ago and tried to sing all the words to the album after not hearing it in years. Being the shithead thief I was, I ended up stealing CD's from my cousins as well to grow my collection. Korn's Follow the Leader, Issues, and Metallica's LOAD album were some of them.

When I wasn't constantly jamming to the black album or songs from my mother's past, I tended to listen to whatever music was on MTV, (Back when they played music non-stop until 10pm when Beavis and Butt-head would start) and video games. When I was four, I would turn my NES on and just let game music run. I continued this hobby into my teens, especially with wrestling games. MTV would allow me to love songs like Mrs. Jones, Bawitdaba, The Hook, No Scrubs, and of course Weird Al when his specials would air. I wasn't too picky as a youngster. I hadn't even owned an instrument at this point yet. My mom had convinced me that Zane was going to give me his guitar when I was old enough, but this never happened, because he never knew about her plan either. I begged for a guitar for years and my only musical outlet would be playing on keyboards of friends. Around age 3, I was given an electric guitar toy for a Christmas. A 1989 Kawasaki Electronic Digital Guitar by Remco. It was enough to make noises and build rhythm, but a guitar it was not. Here's some gear porn for you all. First photo is a photo of my Granddaddy jamming on this sweet bit# the day I got it. It had real guitar strings exposed for 4 or 5 inches, and buttons that would change the pitch of the strings. You could either play in free style, play along in freestyle to programmed music, or strum the strings and the guitar would play with pitch it decided with the music.

One Christmas, when I was around 13, my mother and her friend Marilyn took a trip into Mexico to go Christmas shopping. On Christmas Day, I opened my gifts and stayed hanging out in the living room. My mom claimed that I had my real present in another room and that I would have to close my eyes to get it. I closed my eyes and soon after had something heavy on my lap. I had a classical guitar of my own. It was poorly crafted, but I didn't know any better. I used it every day for a very long time. I found out a year or so later that my mom had sold her blood a few times to try and save up enough money to have a Mexican build it. I still own it, though it is not playable. It's a husk with a split around the entire body, but it's my first guitar, and I can't forget what had to be done to get it to me.

Your Musical Evolution

Okay, here it goes.

Part 1:

I was born a poor black child.

The only musics I was exposed to at the earliest of ages (1-4) were hymnals from church. My dad owned copies of Rush tapes and the Ghostbusters OST cassette, but I didn't realize this until I was an adult. My dad was a movie buff, and with him working all night and my mother working all day, I was babysat by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Michael Keaton. Movies allowed bits and pieces of music outside of church to enter my life, but this music was not memorable for me. From 4-8 I was exposed to a tiny bit of Country music along with the hymnals. Around age 9, my mother began listening to more modern stations and I became aware of Vanilla Ice, The Cranberries, Blind Melon, Snoop Dogg, etc. Let me rewind a bit though.

The first time music did something to me beyond religiously, was in in 1992 I believe. I remember being at a baby sitters house in Beaverton, Oregon. My mother moved up there for 6 months or so after her divorce. I remember the baby sitter was a homely looking woman who rested her tongue in front of her bottom teeth and into her lip. I remember being on her couch as she did house chores beyond me, listening to the radio on her entertainment system. I heard something on the radio that made me feel alive, aggressive, and excited. The song only lasted a minute before the radio switched to a commercial. I asked her what the song was but she said she had not been paying attention. I felt so downhearted and imagined that I would not ever hear that song again.

Fast forward a few months. My mother and I are living with my grandparents in Abilene. My grandparents were very strict and very religious. I owned a karaoke machine and 2 cassette tapes of children's church....stuff. One of the tapes had a big, animated Bible with a face leading children over a hill. My cousin Zane had come for a visit. I loved Zane like a brother. I looked up to him in every way. He was an athlete, a ladies man, and played guitar. Everyone seemed to love him.

While Zane visited, he told me to come with him into my bedroom. I KNOW.... the story sounds like it's about to turn horrible, but it does not. Once we get into my room, he shuts the door, opens my karaoke machine, and chucks the tape onto my bed. He said he wanted me to hear something. He took a see-through black tape out of his pocket and slammed it into the deck. He turned the volume way down as to not allow my grandparents to hear it in the living-room. After a few seconds, I exploded with excitement. it was the song I though I would never hear again. I explained to him the story of how I heard it before. He went on in his own excitement, mentioning how awesome this band was. This song revolutionized my sense of music. It was Enter Sandman by Metallica. He wouldn't let me have the tape, but it was okay because the next year or so would have every radio station playing Metallica's black album every day. I remember going to public pools, pizza places, even toy stores (KB Toys, RIP) and hearing Enter Sandman or Sad But True.

Eventually, Zane would grow tired of Metallica and move onto Pantera, but I was satisfied with Metallica. He gave me all his posters and banners he had collected to decorate my room with, but they would all be stolen by the movers we hired to load our moving truck when the time came to leave Abilene.

Power Supply/brick

Currently, the most powerful power supplies on the market are Yankee Power Supplies. They have a large amount of high voltage ports. You wont have to mess with poorly thought out pedals like Digitechs for example, and how they need their own giant wall plug to work. Their flagship model even has a port for 2400ma. They are a bit bulky, so they won't fit underneath a pedaltrain, most of them anyway, but they are the nuclear power of the pedal world. The highest end supply they sell is around $600, but comes with every bell and whistle you could think of having on an electronic device. The cheapest model they make runs about $200. They are built of a very thick and heavy metal casing that has it's own pedalboard shelves built into the frame, so you don't have to order a rack/stand for it... like SOME companies force you to do.

http://yankee.com.pl/?lang=en

I own a PS-M2 myself. I required a supply that would fit under the pedaltrain I had, so I don't use it currently. I went with a voodoo labs Power Plus 2. I am unable to use digitech pedals until I get an extension cord for the power supply. It's really stupid. My Power Plus 2 doesn't have a port with high enough output to run some of my pedals, so the only way for me to run them is to use the AC plug with the brick cables. Due to it being under my pedalboard, I cannot use the AC plug because it's in too tight of a space.

If the Juggernaut that is Yankee is not your style, here are some other options.

I am watching, "Me, Myself, and Irene" and I just noticed a HUGE error.

When they are shacked up in the motel, Irene and Charlie are laying on a bed together looking at a photo of his family. They begin slowly working toward a kiss when Charlie stops himself and says that he is drunk. He attempts to get out of the situation by going to the vending machine outside and getting a couple of cokes. When he returns, he explains that he nearly lost his temper outside but he was able to control his rage. Irene warms up and says, "Look what I found in my purse." She holds up a full bottle of Bacardi Rum and asks him if he drinks. He tells her, "Well, I dunno. I've been known to tip a few but.... well... alright."

Why is she asking him if he drinks if he was already drunk. Seems they edited it out of order.

Gear Purchases

I thought about it if I got the cheaper one, the saved 600 would be turned into a cabinet, but I drive a 2003 Dodge Neon. I have no way of traveling around with an 8x10. My Fender Rumble nearly doesn't fit in the back seat. When I had a Silverado, my first rig had a Crate 4ohm 2x12 cab that I loved but it now a rolling table for all my crap that I have yet to decide what to do with. It woul dbe awesome to own it, but it's not reasonable for me. I'm currently toying with the idea of putting an ad out to start a nerd band where I would actually be playing in places not intended for bands to be and with no stage. I figured I would bring the Rumble when I play in places without PA's and cabinets and I would bring the Ampeg to church, where I would go straight into the house.

That being said, I have no experience with tubes. I've read about them and had a lot of buddies that used them, but I myself don't know everything about them yet. I've not experienced that distorted drive sound that people talk about unless you consider playing with high gain and low master, but that's not my tone anyway. It makes me wonder though... if I turned a tube head to max while plugging it into a PA, would the PA be getting that sound but under a controlled volume? Also, don't Heads have some audible noise from them without being connected to cabs?

My only cabinets that I still own now are Seismic; a 4x10 and a 1x15. I've heard they are terrible but they've been good for what I use them for. Rarely I will plug something in that the speakers don't like at low volumes.

I really dig, or dug when I played with one at a guitar center in 2010, MarkBass cabinets. A lot of people I look up to are switching from Ampeg, SWR, and such to Aquilar, but what I've heard of them through the internet videos, I don't like their tone.
