Altec Lansing is an American audio manufacturer formed in 1941 when the Altec Service Company acquired Lansing Manufacturing, the speaker company founded by James B. Lansing. The brand's engineering roots trace back to Western Electric's motion picture sound division of the late 1920s, and it went on to define professional cinema and concert sound for decades. Its most famous product is the Voice of the Theatre line of loudspeakers — particularly the A7, introduced in 1947 — which used the 515 woofer and 288 compression driver on a multicellular horn and became a fixture in movie theaters, concert halls, and recording studios. The A7 and the 604 coaxial monitor were among the most widely used studio monitors of their era and were installed at landmark venues and events including Abbey Road, Shea Stadium, and the Woodstock festival.
Beyond the Voice of the Theatre series, Altec Lansing's catalog has included the 639 "Birdcage" microphone, the 604 Duplex studio monitor, and a long line of professional compression drivers and horns that remain sought after on the vintage market. The A7 was inducted into the TECnology Hall of Fame in 2004 in recognition of its lasting impact on audio technology.
The modern Altec Lansing brand focuses on consumer and lifestyle audio, producing Bluetooth and portable speakers (including the Hydra, RockBox, and Shockwave ranges, and models such as the HydraJolt, HydraMini, and HydraBlast), wired and wireless headphones and earbuds (NanoBuds, Nanophones, ComfortQ), noise-cancelling and kids' headphones, and gaming peripherals.
Altec Lansing has 22 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Dynamic Microphones, Effects Processors, and Active & Passive Monitors. Their gear is featured by 24 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Folk, World, & Country. Notable users include James Murphy, Elvis Presley, and Thomas Brenneck.
