The company was launched in 1993 by former session singer and engineer Ted Fletcher, who named it as a tribute to the pioneering British record producer Joe Meek, whose 1960s work with optical compression helped inspire the product line. Early units became instantly recognizable by their bright green chassis — a color reportedly derived from 'British Leyland Jade' paint used on the prototypes.

The brand's catalog centers on the Voice Channel series (VC1, VC3, VC6) combining mic pre, opto-compression, and enhancer stages in a single box, alongside standalone compressors such as the SC2 stereo compressor and SC4 mastering compressor.
