Dax J's Gear
The great thing about this mixer is that it is also a Soundcard, it has a Firewire connection and means I can record 32 separate channels at once. I have a lot of machines and this Midas gives me the freedom to record everything simultaneously into separate stems. I record a lot of live jams with it and this pushes me to take recordings into different directions as a result of the spontaneous workflow. Additionally the EQ’s on the mixer sound really great too, and when pushed hard it also distorts nicely!
The sound on the Pro 2 is tough and I’m always using this machine. I find it great for leads and bass, they really cut through in the mix and sound fat straight away without having to do much work to the sounds. It also has a cool sequencer on it too that’s really simple to program.
ACID! My favourite synth in the studio. This was designed as a replica of the original Roland, it’s made to look, feel and sound exactly like the original TB 303, and it does it very well! Very simple to use, instant gratification. I like to make lots of acid lines and then run them through the effects chain. Every day in my studio is a 303 day!
Dax J Live, Tengenstroom. He plays with the tr-8, octatrack and a tb-303 or tb clone. Also Eventide fx pedals.
Mentioned in this April 1, 2016 Soundwall interview.
My Mac is at the heart of my studio. I use it for my final recordings, mixdowns & mastering. I use Logic Pro, which is a Mac only software, so I am kind of forced to keep using and buying Macs, clever of Apple to have bought Logic all those years ago. This machine is 4 years old, it’s my 2nd Mac Pro that I’ve owned, I upgraded the Ram to the maximum amount of 16gb and it has 4 Hardrives. Even though it is still quite fast, I will probably upgrade to a new machine next year, mainly because new software is generally optimised to run for the newest machines, and this machine is now not as fast as it once. I’ve always found that no matter how good your Mac is, they generally only have a 4-5 year life span and then you have to upgrade.
