Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Arturia BeatStep Pro.

Features and functionality

  • User scale changes cannot be made directly on the unit; requires MIDI Control Center software.

    Source
  • Pattern chaining capability allows users to create complex, evolving sequences, making it more functional than some simpler sequencers.

    Source
  • The Beatstep Pro's individual drum outputs and extensive MIDI and CV connectivity make it versatile for integrating with various hardware setups.

    Source
  • The Beatstep Pro offers a roller strip and randomization probability features that enhance creative sequencing.

    Source
  • The Beatstep Pro's drum sequencer is polyphonic, allowing creative gate connections for polyphonic play despite the melodic sequencers being monophonic.

    Source
  • BSP lacks live recording over multiple patterns; unsaved changes are lost when switching patterns, limiting live jamming potential.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The drum sequencer can sequence the Moog Sirin by setting it to chromatic mode in the MIDI control software and assigning channels to each pad.

    Source
  • No future firmware updates are expected for the BSP, meaning current functionality is final.

    Source
  • The Beatstep Pro's Mackie HUI DAW control enhances workflow with digital audio workstations, a key advantage over other sequencers like the Keystep Pro.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • A used Beatstep Pro for $100 is considered an exceptional deal compared to its typical pricing.

    Source
  • Owners consider it a solid starting point, especially for modular synth setups, given its functionality for sequencing drums and bass lines.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Micro-USB jack on the BSP is less desirable compared to the standard USB socket on the Keystep Pro.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users prefer the Korg SQ-64 for its polyphony and workflow over the BSP.

    Source
  • The Keystep Pro offers four polyphonic sequencers, but users report firmware bugs, suggesting the Beatstep Pro's mature firmware as a more stable alternative.

    Source

Build quality

  • Rotary encoders become wiggly and glitchy after about two years of light to medium use.

    Source

User experience

  • Users find the ability to control three parameters per step with the knobs particularly advantageous for detailed sound crafting.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for minimal synth or wave acts; its ease of replacement due to being a commodity item is beneficial for touring musicians.

Critic Reviews

Arturia: BeatStep Pro Controller & Sequencer | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The Arturia BeatStep Pro impresses as a versatile sequencer and controller, packing features usually found in much pricier gear, such as dual 64-step sequencers and MIDI compatibility, all for just $250. Its intuitive interface and robust build make it a joy to use, whether sequencing with analog synths or digital setups. While its reliance on USB for power could be cumbersome for iPad users, and its all-steps-off default might confuse at first, these are minor quibbles. The unit excels in performance, offering creative possibilities with swing, randomness, and touch-sensitive controls. Overall, the BeatStep Pro delivers exceptional value and fun for musicians looking to expand their sequencing capabilities without breaking the bank.

positive

Arturia Beatstep Pro

soundonsound.com

Arturia's BeatStep Pro impresses with its versatility as a sequencer and MIDI controller at an affordable price. Its extensive connectivity options, including CV, MIDI, and USB, allow it to integrate seamlessly with various setups. The intuitive interface and tactile controls make it a joy to use, while features like randomization and color-coded sequencing add creative flexibility. However, the reliance on a micro-USB for power is a weak point, and some bugs and omissions require attention. Despite needing a computer for full configuration, the BeatStep Pro stands out as a powerful tool for synth and drum sequencing.

positive

Arturia BeatStep Pro review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Arturia's BeatStep Pro is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, offering three independent sequencers, robust build quality, and a versatile performance device ideal for studio producers and live performers. The innovative Randomiser feature and excellent MIDI connectivity make it a standout tool. However, its compact size may hinder live use, and it lacks some desired features like chord playback. Overall, the BeatStep Pro is a desirable piece of gear that sparks creativity and offers excellent value for musicians seeking an inspiring sequencing solution.

Review: Arturia Beatstep Pro : Ask.Audio

ask.audio

Arturia's BeatStep Pro impresses with its standalone sequencing capabilities and thoughtful design, offering a seamless experience for CV and MIDI users alike. The device earns high praise for its packaging and ease of setup, making it a joy from unboxing to operation. However, while it excels as a standalone unit, its lack of dedicated DAW control scripts can be a hurdle for studio integration, requiring more effort from users familiar with MIDI and DAW setups. Despite these minor drawbacks, it sets a new standard in standalone sequencers, promising endless hours of fun and creativity for its price.

Arturia BeatStep Pro Review - One Rig To Rule Them All - AudioNewsRoom (ANR)

audionewsroom.net

Arturia's BeatStep Pro impresses with robust build and versatile step-sequencing capabilities, making it a worthy centerpiece for electronic music setups. Its hands-on interface and extensive compatibility shine, although the lack of polyphonic sequencing and immediate pattern switching are drawbacks. While some users might find these limitations cumbersome, the innovative design and performance features, like randomization and independent swing, offer ample creative potential. If you're seeking an affordable and inspiring tool, the BeatStep Pro is a great choice, despite needing occasional workarounds.

Very versatile sequencer.

This controller can send out three sequences, one to a drum and two to synth voices. It is very versatile and deep and I still need to do some more reading and experimenting with it to get the best out of it! For example, took weeks of research and ordering special midi cords to get it to address my Korg Volca Beats properly! But it did finally work. I am still fairly new to this step sequencer way of making my songs but I hope to continue to improve. The hardware is very robust and it is feature packed and smarter people than men really love it but my Novation SL MKIII keyboard with its 8 built in step sequencer may reduce my need to totally figure this unit out but I still really want to master it! hehe

Brains of flexible, future proof, fun operations

Versatile, flexible, dynamic, fun, future proof. For my new and long term act, I started with this as the brains of my studio and live operations, knowing it will anchor and play with just about anything. Still figuring out a custom, DIY sound module box which I'll develop on Linux or Raspberry Pi, for use of plugins and digital instruments without a computer. And researching the modular synth gear to accentuate my personal sound.

tinnedfish

Very fun and easy to play around

A bit of a learning curve, took me a few video's to grok how to sequence. Now it's super fun and my go-to when I want to explore a new song. While I appreciate the compact size, this does mean every Midi connection has a dongle... I'm always scared I'm going to set up, and discover the dongle is still at home, being chewed on by the cat.

Love my Arty

Arturia is my main dudes and dudettes. I have everything except a MatrixBrute... but... lol... soon... This is simply the best melodic sequencer for the rest of us. strap 2 or 3 on and you got nirvana. Its magic watch people like Sam Battle (Look Mum No Computer) use and push the Beatstep Pros to its limit.

Nice and versatile sequencer

Very good sequencer. I use it as a standalone sequencer to sequence my modular synth. Very easy to use and to switch patterns. Very stable for midi as well as gate and CV's.
