Valve Reactor AC30s-- what are they and do they suck?
One of my guitarists is looking to sell his rather awful Marshall stereo chorus amp and pick up a new one. He's looking at a bunch of different AC30VRs, and I don't know how to advise him. Is it good? Bad? Does it sound different than an AC30? Am I an idiot? I've never seen this distinction in an AC30 before.

That's fair. I'm not a huge Mick Jagger fan in general so my mind didn't go there, but the Stones' music is great. Don't like Mick Jagger.

Cardinal Copia's a better frontman, but all of the Papas were true leaders.

See, I follow a similar process. I get an idea (always in the shower) and I record it. Then I pick up a bass and I play it. I'm a bassist first, so all my ideas are more easily written out on bass even if it's a guitar part. So I write it out, then decide what it's gonna be. Then I play it out on guitar, decide if I like it, and then I flesh out the song from there.
Recently I've been experimenting with an alternate approach, where I just play on my guitar/bass until I find a riff I like. A big part of my music lately has been having a bass part drive the whole song, instead of taking a back seat. It's really interesting and has changed the product completely.

Worst guitarists in Rock and Metal.
If we're talking, like, theory wise then you're 100% correct. Musically his solos make no goddamn sense, but they fit Slayer's music and he's prettydamn famous, so I wouldn't call him terrible.

great live sound and guitar amp article from PG
I like to mix. I have a footswitch for my amp so I just turn the pedal off and the gain channel on for a totally different sound.

Ooh, that's valid. Dave is great, have you heard about the Foos taking fans on stage to play Monkey Wrench?
8yabout 8 years ago
For that price, almost nothing. I would recommend a pair of EMGs, 81/85 or 81/60, but that will go over your range unless you look used. SO look used! Reverb has some deals on pickups if you can find them, so check it out.

Compressor's jack barrel was bent, I fixed that. And... you'll never believe this, but the Joyo was wired up wrong. I put the input in the out and the output in the in.
8yabout 8 years ago
I have a Joyo American SOund. I love the thing to death, which is why I was so distraught last night to turn it and get.... no sound at all. LED turned on, my compressor was in the chain as well, that's not working either. Took it out and tried again, still nothing from the Joyo. Battery powered, jacks look fine. What do I do?!
EDIT: I'm a fucking moron.

CV Jag is a helluva guitar, it really is. I can't play it cuz it's so tiny, but it is excellent. I'd second the J Mascis JM, it's got pickups that sound great and are halfway between a hotter P90 and low output JM. I like the Blacktop, but not everyone does, so keep that in mind.

Got it, thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely see what I can do in terms of production value on the second one, as I'll hopefully have more resources available to me.
8yabout 8 years ago
Some of them do. It's something I'm fixing, hopefully this time around I can get some actual mics that we cn use on the amps, they sound much better that way.
8yabout 8 years ago
Ha! I like their gain, and I did distort that one to high heaven, so maybe that's not the best representation. But yeah, my mixing was less than on point.
8yabout 8 years ago
Hahahaha.... yeah, no, I get you. I know what you're saying exactly, it was the Mesa Boogie sim on the second track. All the amps sounded WAYYYYY better when I was recording, but idk.
8yabout 8 years ago
Not yet, these members just hopped on. On my recordings I'm using GarageBand amp sims, right now.
8yabout 8 years ago
Yep. I actually really really like it, it has every Boss effect ever in its programming. I'm a huge Boss fan so it works for me and my buddy. We use it with a BD-2 and a RV-6 and sometimes we turn on a CS-2.

Nice. I do have another guitarist who has an all-Katana rig, though, and he usually doesn't mic his amp because between the head and the cab he has 350watts. The other guy who bought all his gear used and doesn't know or care about it mics his amp up because he can never compete against the other guy.
8yabout 8 years ago
I think. That sounds right to me... Looked it up, and yeah, that's it.
8yabout 8 years ago
some solid state abomination, he seems to like it but only hwne hes running it clean with a sweet distortion or fuzz in frontt. He sets it around full, as is our custom.
8yabout 8 years ago
My guitarist has a 200w Marshall head into a sweet 2x12 Fender cab. The GK I'm looking at has 2x10 and 500w, so I think I'm good on power with the GK. I have a buddy with a GK 1x12 combo and it was pretty good sounding. Lasted him seven years or so before he sold it for some money, but I never saw it break.
8yabout 8 years ago
Got it. I poked around Reddit too for opinions and people have said that this amp isn't too bad in terms of breaking. I think (since this is absolutely a disposable smartphone purchase) that I might go for it, though for a similar price I could have an Ashdown. It's less watts though, and as this is my first gigging amp in a band with some larger rigs, I think I need more power.
EDIT: According to four different GK owners, their newer amps have stepped up in QC and are actually pretty reliable. One guy has had his for 8 years with no issues, and another said that he had his for 4 years and the pots just started going bad.
8yabout 8 years ago
Huh. To be honest, I'm pretty willing to fix it should it break, even if its a pain, but if you really advise against, I won't jump on it.
8yabout 8 years ago
This one is mint, barely played. What happens when the power supply goes? How long do they last? And if I pay someone else to fix it, will it be okay afterward?
8yabout 8 years ago
...Not sure. I did some digging and that is all I could find. Solid state digital power amp.

is the Walrus Descent Reverb usable?
you forgot th jupiter fuzz, imo best all around fuzz on the market
Oh hell yeah! Love the Jupiter. The Voyager is okay, but not great.
8yabout 8 years ago
SO I found a great deal on a GK MB210-II T Ultralight amp on Reverb, 500 watts of digital power and a 2x10 cab. I'm a fan of the GK sound but if anyone knows what I should look out for or what kinds of sounds it does best, please let me know.
8yabout 8 years ago
That's awesome, I hope that one day I can own a piece of gear like that. I love how attached you can get!

is the Walrus Descent Reverb usable?
Hmm... I know there's a BUNCH of plugins you can use to approximate reverse reverb. You should do some research into it, I'm not well-versed in the effect. Personally the Polara is one of my favorite reverb pedals. I don't think it's too big a deal that you're lacking dry/wet because you can fix that in post. Post-production is your best friend in the studio when it comes to that stuff.

Right, should have said thin nut AND 9.5" radius. At least I'm pretty sure. But I actually like the closer string spacing, it's easy to play. For the record it's a 1.65" nut width, can't remember what that is relative to other nuts.
8yabout 8 years ago
What a review. SOunds liek you did some good work on that old amp, and I love it. I know what you mean about the loss of those magical mids on the newer amps, they definitely have a more tight feel to them. I personally love it, and I like the satisfaction of a tight sound especially in the mids. It's hard to come by.
8yabout 8 years ago
They are still MIM. And they're pretty kickass, even if the prices are rising. The thinline Teles are my favorite kind of semi hollow and they're so resonant it's not even funny. It is a vintage spec guitar, so thin nut, 9.5" radius. The P90s are great, it's light, and the body is comfortable. Colors are lacking though, only comes in shit brown or like a wine red type trans finish.

Under rated Tone Beast Amplifier
rrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRROLAND CUBE!!!! Seriously, the thing is fucking nuts for what started as a little solid-state practice amp. It's one of the few solid-state guitar amps I actually like the sound of, and it kicks ass. Some of the newer combos have bigger cabs, not sure what the speaker dimensions are, it's been ages since I've played one.
8yabout 8 years ago
Damn! Impressive. I like the sock, it's a good cosmetic addition. I assume it still sounds like a dream?

OpAmp Muff is a shout. Definitely check that out, especially if you're going old Orange. And yeah, the OR50 and 100 are just JCM800s. So if you're going Orange, I recommend going used. Their amps, while interesting, really don't offer their own sonic space. Though some of the others in the line actually are quite different that the JCM800 IMO, I find that they get either too bright or too dark really fast and EQing them is a bit difficult. For doom, I think the best way to go is:
Guitar -> Op-Amp Muff -> Reverb? -> Laney-ish amp
