is the Walrus Descent Reverb usable?
Some pedals are just studio tools. Sounds like that's the problem you've hit. If you want a Walrus, I recommend selling this one (since you don't like it) and picking up a new one. If you want a reverb, same thing. I recommend the Boss RV-6 as a cheap and good reverb, or the indomitable Strymon Flint. :P In terms of Walrus, the Julia and Deep Six are some of their best pedals, FYI.

A couple doom artists I know like to use some pretty drastic boutique distortions. I've seen Fuzzrocious stuff in doom, as well as the Longsword and some others. Chelsea Wolfe comes to mind for that kind of sound, but I think it really comes out to some kind of fuzz or super gainy, grainy distortion and a loud '70s amp like a Laney.

Thanks so much, haha. Yeah, it was the jumping back and forth to hit record that got me all nervous, and my phrasing was fine in my head, but I ended up with some really wonky lines that I didn't completely love, but everything I've learned is going into the next one. Namely, get an engineer, because I sure as hell need one.

Upgrading from Oldie LTD, looking for a decent, less-than-$1000 new guitar. Suggestions?
You know what, that is a GREAT shout. The Revstars are some of my favorite guitars, they really are.

Really? I thought I didn't sound that great on the record, but thanks so much! Means a lot to me.

are you looking for humbuckers, single coils, p90, semi hollow, etc and what music do you play, the most versatile guitar ever made imo is the hss strat and an american standard can be found used for under 1000, but versatile means different things to different people
"Versatility" means to me the ability to pull off multiple different sounds and still do something unique. For that reason, I elect the Fender Mustang with P90s. It pulls off a great humbucking tone (if not 100% as thick) and a pretty warm, convincing single coil.

Thank you so much for this. I desperately needed some criticism. I see what you're saying- I was really sloppy on guitar, partly due to a lack of practice and partly due to the fact that it was broken. I actually spent two to three weeks redoing guitar parts on a broken guitar while I wait for the new one to ship. I also wrote very guitar-centrically this time, which you acknowledged as well. I didn't put a lot of effort into vocals and it showed.
Thank you for the compliments on my voice. :) I will take what you've said to heart and use it to my advantage. You're a good friend to have Jim.

Maybe not underrated so much as unknown, but this guy Steve Sladkowski I really like in a punk band I have relentlessly pushed on this website. Here he is live. He uses some really interesting bluesy techniques, and some of his solos are beautifully discordant. His theory is either excellent or he's just really aurally skilled. Not to mention the amount of diversity in techniques he uses-- tremelo picking, playing above the nut, controlled feedback, and cool bends.

Hey EquipBoard, itsure has been a while. Almost two whole years. Apologies for that, I'm an asshole. Wh don't I catch you up on my life?
So after I got dumped, I was feeling super artistically strangled. I quit music for a while as I battled tendinitis, and I was really depressed. My band went to shit, and so did our album, which ended up not going online due to our dispute.
Disheartened, I started a new project. I have labored over an EP nw for a full year, making sure it turned out listenable. And now it is here. I present to you, Heartbreak Sounds. This EP broke my Epiphone, pushed my voice to the limit, made me take drums seriously, and improved my improvization skills. I picked up some theory, and learned to master GarageBand. And, at the same time, I coped with my menta illness and got better.
I treated those chronic stomachaches by the way.

You've both persuaded me. I think I'm gonna go out today, and get a book.

I'm unable to say you're wrong. I alsp dont HATE theory. I just dpn't know it, and don't feel its 100% necessary fpr my style. Thats all.
9yalmost 9 years ago
...Exactly. I wrote a song in... 8th grade? usind theory, and it turned out relly well. I felt awesome, but I had no solid grasp of the concepts at all. Writing other songs, later, I did similar things with different chords and (without theory) wrote some good shit, I believe.
9yalmost 9 years ago
I agree.
I just find the language unnecessary to get to the core of the music.
I also know you're litwrally fifty million times better at songwriting because of theory. And that's fine.
9yalmost 9 years ago
This is another pet peeve. Please stop it. Nobody named Worsnop can be in a worthwhile metal band.
9yalmost 9 years ago
SUPER THIS. I don't like math, but I do like music, so I actively stay away from chord names. I'm just like, "Oh, that fret and this finger position. Okay." I don't care for theory, though having a classically-trained musician in your band is an underrated commodity.

Sure man, I'll link you ASAP. I don't know if we put up the internet version yet, b/c we released a physical copy first.

Yes. I did. We ended up scrapping like five songs and it became an EP, but we did it!

Pretty well. I put out a shortened version as EP... it sold all 500 copies i made! Otherwise, I've had tendinitis in my left wrist so I wasn't playing any instrument much, but I bought that Orange solid-state and (Jim, you're gonna love this) a $99 Epi LPJ. From Guitar Center. No noticeable QC issues... yet

How much is my slightly damaged SE worth?
i mean, probably not. it depends on where/why/to whom you're selling.

Your favorite and least favorite musicians.
hate to be the pop-punk kid but
- the whole band of neck deep, jjust 'cause i like their new album lol
- billie joe armstrong
- mark hoppus
- jim lindberg
least: 1. kanye west 2. rappers in general
also gonna say- I like Childish Gambino, because there's art there behind his "music." might not be instruments, but i find some of his rapping to be brutally honest, and i appreciate that. i feel like there's two kinds of music- "music" and "true music." and this isn't genre snobbery or anything, because there are quite a few newer hip-hop songs that (at least I feel) have a deeper intention than just dancing "music." the same can be said for metal, because those trashy teenagers are destroying the genre's reputation, but the real musicians are hella good. of course, i feel like (in most aspects) that punk engages you in a way that no other music does, so a lot of it is "true music," but at the same time, there's plenty of shitty punk bands who think theyre good.

yeah, i almost prefer lighter basses because they have a lighter voice, but theres always a place for a ten pound mahogany bass in my heart

Squier 60th Anniversary '50s Strat in Aztec Gold
Hmm, very interesting stuff. I happen to like that kind of bullseye pattern. Its unique. Although tbh finish is not my issue.

Squier 60th Anniversary '50s Strat in Aztec Gold
I have played it in studio and im buying it from there. Fretted well, nice lacquered neck. Could be better if it was nitro, but this is Squier so I frgive. Pickups are a bit noissy, but i dont mind, its kinda a nice noise. Less quacky, more punchy, my kind of guitar! Also, the neck is not authentic 50s. its way too thin and i dont like it, but everything else outweighs that.
