Atelier Z Guitar Works Jerry Barnes review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Atelier Z Jerry Barnes Signature bass guitar is a remarkable instrument that combines vintage Jazz Bass aesthetics with modern playability and tone. Its standout features include impeccable build quality, a sleek neck, and a punchy, powerful tone that shines in active mode. While the passive tone is less impressive and the price is steep, its overall quality and performance justify the investment for serious players. A high-quality, player-focused bass that delivers in both feel and sound, though not the lightest option available. If you can afford it, it's a top-tier choice.

"I have to tell you, it’s exciting for me to be involved in something that just wasn’t a big deal. I’ve always played Fender Jazz Basses as much as possible my whole life. And most people do their own version of a Fender Jazz or a Music Man or a P Bass. And when Johnny Motohashi came to me about making the bass, at that time, it wasn’t a signature bass. I said, “how light can you make a Fender Jazz where it won’t lose its tone?”. As you know, with bass weight sometimes changes the tone and sustain. He made one for me – the one that I currently play – and the only changes I made was to have him add 60’s wind pickups in the 70’s placement. And that’s what I’ve been playing for ten years now! I’ve had a lot of people check out the bass and I let them play it and the first thing they say is “my god! It’s so light!”. So now, we actually had our first order about a month ago without any marketing at all yet – it was just somebody who wanted my bass! So it’s going to be custom-made, like mine is, and I can now give people a card or a link to their site so they can get exactly what I play. I’m very proud to be a part of it."
