My favourite vintage bass
Greco violin basses have a nice deep sound, like a Hefner bass, when combined with flatwound strings. You can still find used basses manufactured around the 1970s in stores, some of which may have defects due to their age. However, if maintained (and modified) in player condition, it will be a great live and recording instrument.

In this video, Laura Lee's violin bass is introduced at 21:12. She says she doesn't know what kind of bass this is, but observing the sharply shaped pegs on this bass, and the triangular shaped truss rod cover, it appears to be a Greco violin bass. As for the knobs, they are not shaped like the original Höfner violin basses, which may have been replaced by modifications made by Mark Speer, as she discusses in this video. She says in the video that she uses this bass as a backup for gigs etc.
In this 2023 interview for Mixdown Magazine, Dave Powys confirmed that the Paper Kites used a Greco “Beatles bass” (violin body) while recording The Paper Kites' sixth album, "At The Roadhouse”:
The Greco ‘Beatle Bass’ was integral to the vibe, as was Sam’s ‘75 Martin D35. We tracked some mean organs through the old Leslie speaker too. So glorious!
