PROS

  • Authentic B-3 replacement without the need for large space or heavy lifting

  • Offers hundreds of additional features not found in the original B-3

  • Spot-on Hammond, Vox, and Farfisa organ emulations

  • Good enough piano/harpsichord/clav sounds for a modern digital organ

CONS

  • Steep learning curve to fully utilize all features

  • Interface not very intuitive, making navigation and preset selection initially challenging

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Hammond Skx.

Features and functionality

  • The SKX Pro's key click is unusually pronounced, with limited control via the damping setting, which minimally reduces high-end frequencies.

    Source
  • The attack envelope adjustment significantly alters the sound, potentially rendering the organ unusable for traditional Hammond playing by removing all attack.

    Source
  • The SK2's 8-pin jack allows organ feed separation, enabling connection to external devices like vent pedals or rotary speakers for enhanced sound customization.

    Source
  • The SKX provides dual drawbars and additional foot pedal drawbars, which can be appealing for serious organ players who find a single set limiting.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to the Nord Electro, the SKX Pro offers a superior organ sound but falls short in other instrument emulations like acoustic pianos.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners have found the SKX Pro to be over-engineered in some aspects, such as tonewheel leakage adjustments, while lacking in effective key click control.

    Source
  • Some users find the SKX Pro's interface overly complicated, especially when setting sound combinations, leading to a preference for simpler models like the Crumar Mojo Classic.

    Source
  • Some players find the absence of bend/mod wheels on the SK series limiting, particularly for those who frequently use them in their playing style.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • An SK2 paired with a Roland VR09 allows for a versatile setup: pianos on SK2's lower manual, organ on the upper, and synth on the VR09.

Critic Reviews

Hammond SKX

soundonsound.com

The Hammond SKX is a thoughtfully upgraded stage keyboard that addresses many of the SK2's shortcomings. With dual sets of drawbars and improved access to 100 preset memories, it enhances live performance versatility. Its lightweight design and impressive organ sounds make it a top choice for gigging musicians. However, the keyboard action, while functional, is heavier than ideal, and some extra sounds may not meet the highest standards. Additionally, the reliance on an external power supply is a slight inconvenience. Overall, the SKX balances practicality and sound quality, making it a worthy contender for those seeking a modern Hammond experience.

Versatile keyboard with great organ sounds

I really like my Hammond SKX organ. I think the Hammond, Vox, and Farfisa organ emulations are spot on. As is expected when buying a modern digital organ, the piano/harpsichord/clav sounds aren't perfect, but they are good enough. I wish the overall interface was a little more intuitive... I had a hard time at first navigating the sound library and picking my presets. But all in all, it's a very quality digital organ.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

The Vox Jaguar Mellow w/ sustain (VxJS Mellow) preset does a great job emulating Ray Manzarek's Gibson G-101 on songs like "Touch Me."
