Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Hammond Sk1.

Comparisons

  • It's noted that while the Hammond SK1 has versatile sounds, the Korg CX3 is praised for its dedicated organ performance, highlighting action differences between organ and piano playing.

    Source
  • The Nord C2D and Yamaha CP Reface are mentioned as alternatives, with the latter praised for its Rhodes sound, although its Wurli and Clav are considered less impressive.

    Source
  • The Yamaha YC-61 has a narrower synth action key width of about 159mm per octave, while the Hammond SK1 offers a slightly wider piano key width of 164mm.

    Source
  • The SKX model offers dual drawbars and improved synth and piano sections, making it a worthy consideration for those seeking more versatility than the SK1.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Some users prefer the SK1 for its all-in-one capability despite mixed reviews on non-organ sounds, indicating a trade-off between convenience and sound quality.

    Source
  • Yamaha's non-hammer action keys have been consistently narrower since the DX7, yet remain popular, suggesting many users adapt or aren't affected by the narrower width.

    Source
  • The SK1's onboard Leslie simulation is less favored, but the 8-pin jack allows for connection to external rotary speakers or vent pedals for enhanced sound.

    Source
  • The lack of bend/mod wheels on the SK1 may limit expressive playing, particularly for those who frequently use these controls.

    Source

User experience

  • Several users express that the waterfall action on organs like the SK1 is ideal, but they recommend semi-weighted keys for electric piano sounds, advocating for dual setups.

    Source
  • Owners who have tested both models often find they play better on the Hammond due to its standard key width, despite preferring Yamaha's sounds and interface.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners who prioritize organ performance with additional sound options often consider the SK1, yet recognize the benefit of separate keyboards for distinct playing styles.

    Source
  • The SK1's secondary voices, while high quality, are somewhat limited, making it less ideal for synth-heavy performances.

    Source
  • The SK1 is praised for vintage piano sounds, though the waterfall keys may not satisfy those seeking a piano-centric experience.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The SK1 can connect to foot pedals, expanding its organ functionality for those incorporating them into their setup.

Critic Reviews

Hammond SK1 review | Digital Piano Review Guide

digitalpianoreviewguide.com

The Hammond SK1 is a winner for those seeking authentic organ sounds and portability. It excels in recreating the classic Hammond B3 and Leslie speaker tones, with responsive semi-weighted keys perfect for jazz and rock. While its 61-key model sacrifices range for portability, the sound quality and user-friendly interface stand out. The extra voices, including pianos and clavinets, are convincing but clearly supplemental to the organ focus. Ideal for performers prioritizing organ tones, but less so for those seeking a traditional piano feel. Overall, a solid choice for stage and studio musicians.

Hammond B3 in a portable package

This marvelous little invention is the secret sauce when I go out gigging. I never leave home without it. Just grab an expression pedal and you've got the perfect mini-B3 solution. The extra voices are perfect in a pinch or for the small gigs. High recommended.
