Owner Insights

User experience

  • Users report that the Eyeball can make high-quality microphones sound dull and boomy, significantly altering their natural tonal characteristics.

    Source
  • Multiple users report that the Kaotica Eyeball can create a "dead" sound, which might require post-processing for a more natural tone.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Eyeball's concave interior design and dual-density pop screen are highlighted as unique features not found in simple foam alternatives.

    Source
  • Users describe the Eyeball as adding unwanted low-end frequencies and creating a thin, metallic sound due to internal reflections.

    Source
  • The Kaotica Eyeball can sound muffled in the 300-700 Hz range, especially for singing applications.

    Source

Comparisons

  • DIY solutions using scrap foam and PVC with moving blankets can replicate Eyeball results for significantly less money, often under $50.

    Source
  • Found to be less effective than traditional mic shield setups combined with moving blankets, which offer better sound control and cost-effectiveness.

    Source
  • The Aston Halo is recommended for maintaining natural sound while reducing room noise, in contrast to the Kaotica Eyeball.

    Source
  • The Alctron PF8 is cited as a practical and much cheaper alternative to the Kaotica Eyeball, offering similar materials and effects without the high price tag.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Eyeball effectively reduces standing waves in reflective environments, such as untreated conference rooms, when paired with careful EQ adjustments.

    Source
  • Effective for on-the-road recordings in AirBnBs or hotels, but requires precise mic positioning directly into the Eyeball for best results.

    Source
  • In untreated rooms, alternative solutions like gobo acoustic panels or heavy blankets are preferable over the Eyeball for improving recording quality.

    Source
  • The Eyeball is effective for voice-over work in environments with consistent background noise, like rooms with fans or air conditioning.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some users report significant odor issues with cheaper alternatives, indicating potential material quality concerns.

    Source
  • Some users have noted that the Eyeball’s isolation material is denser compared to other shields, potentially offering better results in certain scenarios.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Considered overpriced at $200, especially when similar products are available for $20-$40, offering comparable sound isolation capabilities.

    Source
  • The Kaotica Eyeball is considered overpriced for what it offers, with many users recommending more affordable alternatives like the Alctron PF8 or even DIY solutions.

Kaotica Eyeball Review: Is It Worth It? - Produce Like A Pro

producelikeapro.com

The Kaotica Eyeball delivers on its promise of providing a portable vocal booth alternative, effectively isolating the mic from untreated room noise for cleaner recordings. Its foam sphere design captures and funnels sound directly to the mic, though some users report unwanted coloration. At $199, it's priced comparably to similar solutions, but alternatives like the sE Electronics Reflexion Filter and Aston Microphones Halo offer less coloration. If you're battling acoustic issues in a home studio, the Eyeball is a solid, albeit slightly pricey, option.

Kaotica Eyeball

soundonsound.com

The Kaotica Eyeball impresses with its unique approach to isolating vocals, offering a lightweight and effective solution for small or inadequately treated spaces. It successfully channels more vocal energy into the mic without significant sound coloration, maintaining frequency response integrity. Its compact size enhances usability, allowing better eye contact and easy access to lyric sheets. While it might seem pricey for foam, it competes well with conventional screens, offering broader screen coverage. However, users should ensure proper positioning for optimal results and consider additional room treatment. Overall, it delivers on its promise as a practical tool for both home studios and voice-over work.

don't waste that amount of money for this

Sold mine. I don't regret it for a second. to be fair, yes, does what it says, but for me this was absolutely not a significant improvement, If i had to do it over I would have bought a clone, and had very similar acoustic results. It just didn't work well...at least not for the ridiculous price they charge for a damned foam ball.

Get a great vocal take anywhere, anytime

I never thought I'd feel grateful to have spent $200 on a piece of foam, but this piece of foam absolutely changes the game. Definitely adds a little boxiness, but you were always going to do a subtle cut in 300-500 range to remove mud and increase clarity anyways, right?

Unbelievable

I was skeptic about this one, i tried to make one and it was awful, decided to just go for it and im glad i did! If you dont have a fully treated vocal booth or live room, i HIGHLY RECOMMEND this!!

hi1mham

great space saver

Pros: Makes working in my bullshit apartment environment a possibility. It looks decent and is great for small spaces unlike the other portable isolation booths I've tried.

Cons: Your mic sounds like its in a foam ball... because it is.

Great!

I use this to isolate my microphone while I do commentary for videos.
