Critic Reviews

OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock 14-port docking station review | Macworld

macworld.com

The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock offers a solid array of ports and an impressive 85W charging capability, making it a strong contender in the dock market. However, its reliance on Mini DisplayPort instead of the more common DisplayPort can frustrate users, as it necessitates additional adapters for most displays. While it competes closely with the Caldigit TS3 Plus, its higher price and the need for more accessories to connect displays might deter some buyers. Overall, it’s a capable product that satisfies many needs but isn’t without its quirks.

OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock Review: A 14-Port Do-All Solution for Working from Home | Gear Diary

geardiary.com

The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock shines with its sleek design and numerous ports, offering impressive performance and fast transfer speeds. However, its lack of an HDMI port is a significant oversight in a world reliant on HDMI connections, and the absence of a physical power button adds to user frustration. While it can power a single 5K monitor, users with dual-monitor setups might encounter power issues that require manual adjustments. Priced at $249.99, it’s a solid choice for those needing a versatile docking solution, but potential buyers should weigh its limitations against their specific needs before committing.

OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock review: 14 ports for your Mac

cultofmac.com

The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock offers a remarkable 14 ports, delivering extensive connectivity options for Mac users. Its sleek design and solid performance make it an appealing centerpiece for any office setup. However, the dock's size and hefty power brick may deter those seeking portability, and the lack of an HDMI port could be a dealbreaker for some users. While it excels in supporting multiple USB-C devices and boasts impressive data transfer speeds, the price tag may feel steep for budget-conscious buyers. Overall, it's a robust solution for those who need versatility and speed, but it comes with a few trade-offs.

OWC Thunderbolt 3 review on cinemasound.com

cinemasound.com

The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock shines with its impressive array of 13 ports, catering specifically to the needs of creatives. Its addition of S/PDIF digital audio output is a game-changer, restoring functionality lost in newer Mac laptops. However, the sound quality from the 3.5mm ports leaves something to be desired, along with the necessity of an extra adapter for full compatibility. While it's pricier than competitors, the robust performance and specialized features make it a worthy investment for filmmakers and audio professionals alike. Overall, this dock is a solid choice, despite minor drawbacks.

Mentioned in this October 26, 2020 OWC Radio interview.

I’ve got generations and generations of OWC stuff. So I have ThunderBays that go back to neanderthal times were spinning hard drives and stacks of big ones and little ones. When SSDs came out in the two and a half-inch format, then I was using box; they’re taking the little mini ones. And that was transformative because it meant I could carry libraries with. Previously we were running external RAIDS, and they became bigger and heavier and noisier, and everything else, and suddenly these little boxes could outperform them. And why for instance, the Accelsior cards are working so well for me in terms in my new Mac Pro, is that it allows me to have a system now where I don’t have all these boxes hanging off the outside of my Mac Pro as much as I love the trash cans because they were very compact and transportable. The problem was you ended up with this spaghetti of stuff that was running off them. The 4M2s were great because they were the first time I could get the NVMe up to size to like, actually get some NVMe RAIDs that were big enough for me to use them properly. And then, of course, I’ve got all the sort of hubs. The different Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 2 hubs that I’ve had for years. I mean, I’ve been buying stuff from OWC for 15 years. I’m going to guess since it first appeared, it was the place where I would buy all the bits and pieces. And Larry’s wonderful. But I also know that when we were having some issues, there was a bug in the 10.15.4 Apple release of Catalina that was affecting large data transfers. And the guys at SoftRAID and the guys at OWC worked tirelessly with me to try and solve. We nailed it down with a fix, and the guys could not have been better. I think that’s the thing that I would say about OWC, and the reason I agree to talk to you about it is that they’ve gone the extra mile. And I think that for someone like me, that’s worth in gold.
