RME is a German pro audio manufacturer founded in 1996 by Matthias Carstens and Ralf Männel in Haimhausen, near Munich. The company grew out of work published in the German electronics magazine ELRAD and quickly established itself as a leading maker of audio interfaces, digital converters, microphone preamps, and MADI/network audio solutions. Every member of the RME development team is either a musician or sound engineer in addition to being a hardware or software specialist, a philosophy that shapes the company's engineering-first approach to product design.
RME's product line spans portable and studio-grade audio interfaces, including the Fireface series (UFX, UCX), the compact Babyface Pro, and the ADI-2 line of reference-class converters and DAC/headphone amplifiers. All RME interfaces ship with TotalMix FX, the company's proprietary DSP-powered mixing and routing software, which has been a core differentiator since its introduction in 2001. RME also manufactures the 12Mic and OctaMic microphone preamps, HDSPe PCI Express cards, and the MADIface series for high-channel-count MADI connectivity.
RME gear is widely used across recording studios, broadcast facilities, live sound, theater, and scientific research. Notable users include Supa Dups (Grammy Award-winning producer), Ahrue Luster (guitarist for Ill Niño and Machine Head), Blue Man Group, Purity Ring, and Broadway percussionist Andres Forero. The company is distributed in the Americas by Synthax USA.
RME has 86 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Audio Interfaces, A-D & D-A Converters, and Preamps. Their gear is featured by 178 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Martin Molin, Avicii, and Deadmau5. Most RME products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
