"To all the Alex Van Halen freaks! I recently picked up a 1980 Tama 6.5x14 Rosewood Mastercraft I’ve been wanting for a long time! It’s great! This is the same brand and model snare that Alex used from Fair Warning to OU812 (TTBOMK)… These records have some of the most beautiful and unique snare tones to my ears! It is a sound that actually enriches my life! Of course it is how Alex tunes and hits, and also how it’s miked, eq’ed and mixed etc... but it has to start somewhere. I had to find out for myself. It has great depth, snare clarity and a serious throat, honk and bonk to it! And they don’t make ‘em anymore!
Using a Remo Emp X and Canopus wide strainer.
I played similar grooves to “I’ll Wait”, “Drop Dead Legs” and “Mean Street” and the second clip is a little bit of “Hot For Teacher”. I can’t wait to record this snare! 🥁👍🏼💥🔥
