A terrific trove of workhorse keys
Addictive Keys stays in the root of my Ableton plugins folder so I can just drag it in and start sketching out ideas. Currently available as individual instruments or bundles, this is a great collection of meticulously sampled keyboard instruments - a Steinway Model D Grand, a Yamaha U3 Upright, a Fender Rhodes Mark 1 Electric and there is also a CP-80 Electric Grand. In addition to dry recordings of each, there are a number of traditional mikings and also creatively processed variations. It's easy to load and use, and low on CPU.
Good piano VSTi for starting out
Addictive Keys Studio Grand is a good piano VSTi, especially considering it comes free with some Focusrite audio interfaces. It was definitely a step up from what I used at the time. But I've since moved on to Modartt Pianoteq 6, which I find much more playable on a MIDI keyboard - probably because Pianoteq is modeled, while Studio Grand is sampled (which also means it uses more disk space & RAM). Studio Grand is still good, but it never cured me of looking for alternative pianos VSTs the way Pianoteq has.
If you need the perfect piano sound, this one is THE PIANO you need. I've tried so much piano emulations and sampled pianos... None of them equals XLN Audio products. I'm using both Grand Piano & Upright Piano, I've never been deceived by the sound. Precise control of everything, the mic choice, mic position, reverb, delay, compression, eq, stereo, saturation, velocity and even hard/soft kind of playing can be edited. No matter if you make classical, EDM or pop music, this is the best piano plugin ever.
wonderful piano vst, but perhaps not for the price
definitely one of the most impressive piano vst's i've used, but to my ear it does sound just about the same as something like keyzone classic. and when the latter is free, i'd have a hard time being sold on the extra features for addictive keys for $90. it came with my midi controller, and it was a good inclusion. but, maybe don't buy it on its own.
Grand piano add-on for Addictive Keys.
The Studio Grand Addictive Keys ADpak features a Steinway Model D Concert Grand piano. At 8' 11 3/4" (274cm) in length, this majestic instrument is the overwhelming choice of the world's greatest pianists. More than ten Steinway Grand Pianos were auditioned before finding the one with the most desirable character: a crystal clear and open timbre with a perfectly balanced resonance.
This version of the Studio Grand was approached with production in mind. Fitting a grand piano in a mix can be hard and often results in a compromise of the sound quality in order to make it fit with the other instruments and vocals. By offering the exact recording setup in Addictive Keys and the option of mixing and matching microphones, Studio Grand is sure to fit nicely into any production style.
Studio Grand was recorded in a large recording studio at the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. The studio is famous for being extremely quiet and for having a controlled acoustic ambience; for such a large room the reverberation still sounds tight and airy which is a rare combination and the perfect condition for recording a grand piano.
The recordings were done using rare vintage tube and ribbon microphones capturing the instrument at several different perspectives. From close up perspective with microphones next to the soundboard to far away perspective with natural room ambience. The end result is a warm and vibrant sound that goes from intimate to larger-than-life. The vintage microphones used were hand picked from the studios impressive collection.
