Description
The CP-80 was an electric grand piano developed to deliver the depth of expression of an acoustic instrument while holding its own when performing on stage with electric guitars played at full volume through an amplifier and speakers. In contrast to the CP-70, which has 73 keys, the CP-80 has 88 keys just like a grand piano. Very similar to a cut-down acoustic grand piano, the CP-80 features the same frame action and frame construction as an acoustic piano, but can be split into two cases for storage, and utilizes an electric guitar-style pickup system to pick up the sound for amplification via an amplifier.
Its characteristic bright, edgy sound swept the music scene, with the CP-80 seeing extensive use in both live performance and recording scenarios.

Charly García began using the Yamaha CP-80 Electric Grand Piano during his time with Serú Girán. Initially, he borrowed it from the Vitale brothers, who owned one of the first, if not the first, CP-80s in Argentina. At the time, Charly couldn't afford such an expensive instrument, but the CP-80's sound was a perfect fit for the evolving music of Serú Girán, offering the "bite" that the Rhodes couldn't. This instrument replaced the Rhodes he previously used with Sui Generis and La Máquina. During this era, Charly's primary setup included the Wurlitzer, CP-80, Solina, Clavinet, Minimoog, and Opus 3. He also experimented with the Sound City Piano by DMI, a simple analog piano similar to the Crumar Roadrunner and the RMI Electrapiano. This usage can be observed in the 1980 rehearsal footage of Serú Girán on YouTube, shared by RarezasSNM.
Vulf used the Cp80 for few dates, especially for the live at Madison Square Garden.
At 5:16 in this studio tour with MusicTech, Ulrich points to his Yamaha CP80 and says "That's the piano. Its a semi-electric piano, the Yamaha CP80. Works a bit like an electric guitar. It has strings so you can also play it when it's not amplified, but there's pickups inside and you can plug it straight into a mixing desk and it's quite easy to record that.".
"The Yamaha CP80 sends MIDI,” Rjd2 elaborates, “so it can trigger both the Nord Lead Electro and the Korg Polysix. Sometimes I layer those three synths together to get some cool sounds, running it all through a Leslie cabinet."
"In The '80s, Billy's live choice of piano was a Yamaha CP-80, an electric grand piano marketed in the late 1970s and 1980s and popularized by Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Simple Minds and U2, and revived by Keane in The Oughties. Joel brought a CP-80 to his historic 1987 concerts in Russia. Angered by security harassing the dancing audience members, and hoping to distract the guards and raise a ruckus, Joel threw the (relatively) light and compact CP-80 offstage (not towards any audience members) to much controversy"
Francisco Durán is documented to have used the Yamaha CP-80 Electric Grand Piano during the recording of Los Bunkers' album "Noviembre," as evidenced in the "Making of" video filmed at Sonic Ranch, Texas, provided by Los Bunkers on YouTube.
In a February 1992 interview, Tori Amos stated, "I use a Yamaha CP-80 electric grand live because it packs in boxes... The CP-80 has no edge. But at the same time, it's consistent and I can't rely on someone getting me a piano that might have no action."
In a November 2025 article from Future Music, Kjartan Sveinsson is confirmed to use a Yamaha CP-80 Electric Grand Piano during the recording of the album "Takk...". Sveinsson states:
The piano is more essential now, like my Yamaha CP80 Piano, and the Yamaha SK20. I think sometimes people mistake it for a guitar. On Glósóli it is actually a piano. I always put a mic inside the piano just to record the strings. It's very percussive.

As knowing the sound of the real CP80 sound/timbre and owning a Yamaha Reface CP (Yamaha's replication of various electric pianos and the infamous 'CP80'), this soft-synth is a great replication of the CP80 - dare I say it sounds more realistic than Yamaha's Reface replication of the CP. It features an array of mic positions for the amp emulation section of the software (plus different mics even though they have fixed positions as far as I am aware), DI inputs including a DI into the Roland 'Dimension D 'and also comes with a plethora of effects. In terms of relation I'd say this replication is perfect for someone who, like me, loves the unique timbre of the CP but doesn't possess the space nor money for the real object. Furthermore, this is fully suitable for the workflow of a vast majority of modern producers.
