Deceptively useful
Even if you don't have access to the MU10's XG extensions, this synth's output is top quality, especially for its age (24 years at the time of writing). Just plug in a decent MIDI controller and allocate the knobs and sliders to the right parameters and you will have a lot of power considering how modest its simple beige casing makes it appear. The sawtooth and square wave sound beautiful with the virtual filter and digital effects.
I have since found that the ancient Yamaha XGworks software works on Windows 10 and not only gives you full access to all the MU10's XG tones and parameters via MIDI - no proprietary host cable required - but also allows you to route other MIDI keyboards through the one connected to the MU10 without having to move any plugs around!
