The electronic soloists dream...

The VL70-m Virtual Acoustic Tone Generator is a compact, low-cost addition to Yamaha’s expanding line of Virtual Acoustic Synthesis instruments, which gives electronic musicians the flexibility and range for greater personal musical expression. The most musical tone generation system ever created, VA Synthesis is as versatile and and easy to use from a keyboard as from a Wind MIDI Controller or a Guitar MIDI Converter.

Critic Reviews

Yamaha VL70m

soundonsound.com

Yamaha's VL70-m is a standout in the realm of physical modeling synthesis, offering superb sound quality and expressive capabilities at a surprisingly affordable price. While it lacks the polyphonic richness of its predecessor, the VL1, its monophonic nature shouldn't deter potential buyers due to its remarkable versatility and control options. The user interface, though not overly intuitive, is workable, and Yamaha's inclusion of external editing software provides a pathway for deeper sound customization. The VL70-m is ideal for musicians seeking unique, expressive sounds without breaking the bank, but be prepared for a learning curve to unlock its full potential.

Yamaha VL70m

soundonsound.com

Yamaha's VL70-m is a mixed bag, offering unparalleled synthetic wind sounds through its physical modeling and breath control, yet it stumbles with integration issues for sequencer use. While the sound quality is exceptional, the breath controller's design limits flexibility, causing frustration for users who rely on sequencers. Workarounds exist, like using an external breath controller or a custom MIDI switcher, but they add complexity. Despite these challenges, the VL70-m's musical expressiveness when breath control is managed makes it a worthy contender for those willing to tinker.

Very few users but perfect at all of them

Unlike many of Yamaha's other products from the time, the VL70-m is very specialized. It exists solely to provide monophonic, virtual acoustic sounds, with an emphasis on highly detailed and synthetic sounds as well as stunning recreations of woodwinds and brasses. It can be though to make it sit in a mix, but the sheer realism and character of it makes it a must own in my opinion, especially when coupled with a WX or EWI.
