So that is why you got all that experience with tons of gear!

Yeah, you joined December 07, 2014 at 8:22 pm. Time flies when you're having fun! :)

Thanks! ...And we still have a super long way to go to make this what we want it to be. We've learned a ton along the way (often what NOT to do). We have had ideas that we worked on that didn't pan out like we hoped and we still have a lot to work on to fix bugs and build things the community is requesting.
Little things that sound easy take us a while to actually build out. Some examples we have requests for now are 1) continuing to make editing easier for all the things 2) adding a previous section for gear that an artist doesn't use anymore 3) finding a way to better categorize things 4) mapping out signal paths... you get the idea. We'll keep trying to improve it.
All things considered, I'm super happy the way the community is evolving and growing. Just in case you guys are curious, Equipboard is currently growing at about 15% per month. :)
By the way, (and sorry I missed this yesterday) thanks for being a member for 1 year and 1 day now!
10yover 10 years ago
Yeah, you're exactly right. We pay a several thousand per month for everything. That includes servers (we have about 500,000 visits/month to equipboard now), and third party software services (like algolia for our search and embedly for showing youtube embeds) which all adds up with several million pageviews per month.
I wouldn't call us profitable at this point but we make money with affiliate links, mostly from our articles (like the best fuzz pedals, how to choose a chorus pedal, etc). That means when someone reads reviews about a product on equipboard's article, if they then go to amazon or guitar center directly from us and buy that thing, we make a small % of that sale. It doesn't cost the buyer anything.
10yover 10 years ago
We should definitely do that. It is cool to me that people are interested.
10yover 10 years ago
The very first page (again, it looked totally different back then) went up in March 2013.
10yover 10 years ago
The short answer is gchiaren and I were curious about what Jack White was using to get his tone. We didn't like the answers that came back on google at the time, and wanted to build something better than a buried forum thread with a "my friend is roommates with his guitar tech and says..." type answers.
It started almost as a blog. But then more and more people started contributing and the community has been forming as we've been building features to open it up more and more. (Thanks to everyone here!)

Do demo videos count as an artist using gear?
Personally, I'd still like to know what Rob thinks of it. I'd still get value out of him saying, "This is Junk, and you should probably go with something else."
What do you think?
10yover 10 years ago
Can't submit amps to Equipboard
Instrument Accessories > Guitar & Bass Accessories > Amplifiers
Hope that helps!

Do demo videos count as an artist using gear?
This is really a tough one for me. My thought is to include it. I think everyone has really good points, but ultimately for me, it gets down to what can be proven.
If an item is associated with someone (or they said something about it), I like adding the item and linking to the proof. I think while it may or may not be a relevant item depending on who you are and what is important to you, the alternative solution is much less defined to me. If we only include the important stuff, who gets to decide what is important? Are tuners important? EQ pedals? Is a guitar that someone used on the Tonight Show performance but not on the album important? I would rather post the link and let people decide what is relevant to them.
I know there are outliers which makes this really difficult. If Chappers owned every guitar he demoed, he'd have quite the collection. My personal approach is to approve it and try to post the most appropriate notes I can so as to not mislead if I know they don't really use that guitar. Something like, "In this demo video, Rob demos this guitar and says, "I love the fretboard, but would never buy it because it's just not my style..." about the telecaster." or something similar.
Thoughts?

That is so cool!
...Why must all the cool things be so pricey?!

Great list update.... And there goes my day on YouTube! :)

Embed your Equipboard to a website ?
Very cool! Thanks so much for the response and example. We're really excited to start working on this. :)

Nice list! I also like GearManDude for pedal shootouts.

Embed your Equipboard to a website ?
Hi cereyanlimusiki There's not currently, but that is absolutely something we want to do in the future. I personally link to my Equipboard on my personal site and on the forums I participate in. Sorry it's not available now, but love the idea and hope to have it ready ASAP!
If I may ask, what would be ideal for you? Would you want it to show all your gear at once? Maybe just the first 8 items you use and a link to your full board? What would work best for your website?
Your feedback would be super helpful as we build this out!

33 famous guitarists, their first guitars, and how they learned
First Guitar: Fender 1998 California Series Stratocaster. Looking back, I didn't have a great reason for getting that model, other than gravitating to it in Guitar Center. Not knowing anything about guitars, I'd always come back to the candy apple red strat. I flipped a lot of burgers to save enough money for that guitar.
How I Learned: Playing with other people and printing our the chords. Still working on it! :)
First Song: Dammit by Blink 182

ALL EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS TURNED OFF AND STILL GETTING SPAM FROM EQUIPBOARD
Hi Trelll,
Thanks for being part of the community, and sorry for all the unwanted emails. It looks like you have two accounts:
trelll- this account has emails settings to not receive emails.
terrellsprecher- this account has been receiving emails, but I just changed the settings so you shouldn't see them anymore.
Hope that helps!

I think @jimmarchi1 answered this more thoroughly than I ever could, but I love the double cut les paul specials. I think they have a really great warm tone and you can pick up a nice used one for well under your budget.
Maybe not this '59 one, but you get the idea.... https://reverb.com/item/384200-gibson-les-paul-special-double-cut-cutaway-electric-guitar-w-hsc-1959

I have a couple, is that okay?
Cream T- These are amazing. I want them so bad. They seem really interesting to me, but never have gotten to play them in person. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=731D191pmkk
Alnico 2s- The classic choice. Great for classic rock and blues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZngum4f5d0

Something that is wrong and it needs to be fixed
That’s a good point. I think the thought to date has been we don’t want different guitars listed for things that don’t necessarily matter. What I mean by that is that the color doesn’t affect tone, so we don’t want to have a different color variation for every guitar, since then we would lose a lot of connections we find interesting. For example, if Keef’s tele is a blonde finish, and Brad Paisley is playing a sunburst one, we still think it’s interesting having those connected, so you can see they both play the same model tele. However, not all tele’s are created equal, so if someone plays a ’72 telecaster deluxe versus a telecaster custom versus a standard telecaster, that is interesting information that certainly affects tone and should be noted, especially if an artist prefers a certain tone/knob positions on one guitar and a different settings on another. That’s incredibly interesting to me!
Anyway, right now we’ve taken the stance of if it affects tone (different model, wood, pickups, etc) it should be noted, and if it is just an aesthetic change like color it should be consolidated under one model.
What do you think? I’d love to know what is best for everybody, since this is a question that is somewhat hard to answer. Thanks!

Thanks for following up! It's definitely a cool guitar.

Wrong picture in artist's page, and hello
It's the button that says, "get updates on phil thornalley's gear" right below the artist picture.

We thought "follow" might be a little confusing since it's like, what does following get me? So we decided to be more explicit. But maybe we accidentally made it more confusing? What do you think?

Wrong picture in artist's page, and hello
Hi guedzilla, and welcome to Equipboard! Thanks for the heads up- I changed the image and added a link to his website to his profile.
We're working on making it easier to make edits to pages now, so it should be better soon. In the meantime, would love to hear any other thoughts or feedback you have.

I'm a blues/rock fan, so recently I've been impressed by Gary Clark Jr., Benjamin Booker, and Alabama Shakes. Not sure if those folks meet your criteria, but hope you enjoy.
Here's Gary at Crossroads.

Not sure if you guys care about the history, but starting at 4:58 in this documentary about Cry Baby, it tells the story about how Cry Baby and Vox pedals evolved from the effect creator himself.

Thanks to everyone for making 2014 an amazing year! I love what everyone is doing, the ideas and suggestions, and the community we are building here. Wishing everyone a happy 2015!

Help identifying these pedals?
They look to be Electro-Harmonix to me, but I'm not 100%.
If I had to guess, the red one might be the Micro POG based on the coloring of the box and knobs. However, it seems the one in the picture has a black stripe along the top, but it could just be a piece of tape.

I'll qualify this response with a disclaimer. I have never built my own guitar, but I do have aspirations to do so.
Having said that, I definitely want to start on a solid body (I don't have the guts to jump straight into the semi-hollows). I also know I want a Bigsby. I think some nice FilterTron style pickups would finish it off nicely. Now I'd lean toward a tobacco or sunburst style finish. I'm definitely not talented enough to pull that paint job off, but I'd value the imperfections.
Some personal inspirations:

John Bolin's Broadcaster http://youtu.be/sQTIBtolr9Y?t=41s

Yeah, it sounds like there is no wrong answer. The Fender seems to be the least expensive of the three (assuming you're in the US), but I'm personally a sucker for the Vox, especially if you'll primarily be using the clean tone. I think this vid does a decent job of showcasing that amps clean potential. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tARaVyhycTE
While I love the Orange's crunch, I think the Fender and Vox beat it on clean.
12yalmost 12 years ago
That's a great question, and one that's difficult to answer without a little more information. It sounds like you have the choices narrowed down to your three favorite, and they all seem to be from reputable companies, but since the most important thing in this decision is sound, I would ask you what tone you're looking for.
I would then suggest going to YouTube and looking at several videos that demo the amps you're considering, and see what style of playing is most in line with what you'd like to do. Sorry if that's vague, but I think the most important factor in this decision is to start with tone, which is a subjective metric.

Good find. I couldn't find the exact guitar on the rebelrelic site yet, but that definitely seems to be the best guess so far.
How long has Cream T been around? I found this video from NAMM 2011, but the official site still seems to be a pre-order page.
