Update Thread Thing

Reddit is pretty quiet for musicians, but /r/Mathrock and /r/Postrock has been stepping up their game with all the new music. Just a few days ago, this thread popped up and I really am digging this band, now.

Pickup issues

Happened to me once before when some bellend decided to take the bass we use and unscrew the back plate. It messed up the action and I never knew until I took it to my local guitar shop. Fixed up free within five minutes. Learned something new that day.

Eh, sorely dissapointed in The Wilderness. Not sure if I like how the band is going back to songs like Greet Death and Will You Pass Through This Night. I heard EITS perform some of The Wilderness live and it just didn't feel right to me.

I had an assortement of nicknames before I settled on Narcist. Not sure how I got there, but it's way betterthan the old screen names. And didn't all the younger kids think we'd be abducted? How odd.

Oh hey, I didn't know Totorro were touring. After hearing their Home Alone album and seeing the new singles for their newest album, I'm very curious as to what the rest will sound. What'd you think of them?

Also, welcome back! Have you thought about hitting up /r/Mathrock or /r/Postock? I've been getting a lot of new music from there and I'm fairly happy with it.

You don't need to put it on your gear porn. Just upload the image to Imgur and post the link to it here,

Where my fellow drummers at?

Just curious and probably of interest to others, could you tell us a bit about yourself? What artists you like and influence you, a bit about what gear you have, etc etc.

Pickup issues

Shit, Duke, I'm sorry to hear you're having problems. Didn't know you picked up an RG, though, but good luck fixing it.

By the way, I believe Boom is asking for you in his own English thread.

Identifying the gear

Hehe, I remember listening to Green Day many years back and loving them. They're still catchy, but more in that pop sort of "I hate it, but it's catchy and stuck in my head" sort of way. Bands like Green Day remind me a lot of Slipknot, or Avenged Sevenfold. They're get you going when you're younger, but you're really made to grow out of it.

That being said, I still think that Vol. 3 is a fantastic album.

No "Drums & Percussion" Main Topic?

We honestly have had so little talk about drums and percussion. I'm 100% sure we've never actually had a drum-focused thread here either. Perhaps you should be the first to do so, Jeremy.

Equipboard submissions EVOLVE!

The fact that this process is still "locked down" is an oversight on our part. I will add that to the todo list right away, that mods should have the power to swap out items.

I was always under the impression that that was a site administrator function. Like, we need an understanding of how to edit a site's source code and such to move and edit information on a page. I must be mistaken, but wouldn't that be true about certain actions on your part?

Identifying the gear

Damn, this was actually annoying to find. Codella's website apparently went down, "expired" apparently. Anyways, you can find the original images from the website on Google Images.

It seems to be a special made Codella Surfchaser, as the Surfchaser series all have an SSS configuration while the Stormchaser has the HSS configuration and the Dreamchaser is an HH configuration. I'm sure Anthony may have paid for the purple paint job and mirror pickguard. Very nice.

If you want to make a new item, good luck getting a good image... you can see the images Codella used on their website on Google, but you can't view the source image as its tethered to Squarespace. They'll just tell you Codella's account is expired.

I like the sound of a Stratocaster but the feel of a Les Paul

Scale: I have small hands so string tension and finger position come in to play. I have tried short scale Fender products and did care for the sound, feel, or the shape/style.

A fairly articulated answer to why one prefers a longer scale length... I have the same preference, but just because I grew up with longer scales, so using something like a Les Paul feels a bit off to me (even if the sound is pretty great).

How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.

I'm thinking I'll get a Paul Cochrane Timmy and sit with that and the Black Fountain... Pedalboard was stored away. The bottom of the case is nearly halfway through collapsing, so I can't move it around.

I'm actually just covering some TTNG songs. It's really enjoyable to play outside of common time.

How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.

We've mused over a few times and come up with a few solutions, but we've been spending time on other projects. We just set up our little drum room (which is basically a tiny hole in the wall that fits one person and a drum kit) with lots of padding for the sound.

For electrics, we have that cab sim, and something about using one of the back rooms as a place to plant our amps, pad the whole room, mic'em up, and run the mic'd sound into the PA's.

But anyways, before we both go on a tangent, would you have an answer to my first question?

Because when I go out to actually play at church, I don't have the luxury of a Vox with a gain knob that can just get that perfect sound I'm looking for. Instead, I have a virtual amp that no one has the time to tweak. It's not set for me, and I can't really do anything to change that.

Either way, I have to assume my double-'bucker is going into Mr. Clean's Squeaky Clean Virtual Amplifier and nothing else besides my effects pedals. We're planning on getting a cab simulator for both electric guitars, but I don't know much about it.

Been listening to some music and I realised how much I love the tone from This Town Needs Guns:

YouTube.com/watch?v=d26VeBKntvA

Basically, just the start of this album with the hammer-ons and such... It's not really a clean sound, but it's very solid and metallic. Can this be achieved with a low-gain overdrive such as a Walrus Audio Messner? Or can this only be done on an amplifier (which I replicated magnificently on the Vox, but not the point)?

A five-stringer, eh? Honestly, staying with one instrument that I won't tire of doesn't sound like me. The feeling of outgrowing a guitar is pretty amazing (starting to begin with my acoustic) and I can't imagine staying just with one instrument. The Spector does look nice and, if I were able to tell the difference in sound between all of them, I'd probably tell you if I liked the sound.

Fenders... a Jaguar bass. Or maybe Epiphone's EB-3. Or or-

A serious choice I will make sometime in the future.

Since you're here, Boom, how do you feel about "baritone guitars" or basses like te Fender Bass VI?

Musicians who start out on an expensive guitar, and go years without buying anything else, but instead mooch off of those with pedals, cables, and amplifiers.

True. The gauge hasn't really much of a tone change, but the reason I've stayed on .11 (and soon .12) for this long is comfort. I forgot about tone long ago... It just feels nice to have sch thick strigs that still bend pretty well.

10yalmost 10 years ago

Your musician pet peeves

Idiot me thought it'd be a good idea to use thicker strings. Damnit, now I am very uncomfortable with .08 or .09 gauge strings.

When you go to a concert early and you're watch the headliner kill it but the people around you are either texting endlessly or playing crossword puzzles at the VERY FRONT. Quite disrespectful...

On another note, it's very interesting to see who goes to certain concerts, especially early. Met a few photographers, a luthier (forgot to get his website!), lots of gear enthusiasts, and a few others, so it wasn't too bad.

Quick Technical Amp Q

It's like a soft crunch if that is actually a thing. I've yet to tet this with a good amount of volume, so don't take my word for it.

Also, I just thought of something. If you put a boost before an overdrive, the overdrive will be the main determiner of volume going into the amp, right? I was thinking this because I realised that a clean boost before an overdrive might do more gain increase than actual volume boosting, but I'm not entirely sure.

Welcome back, Walrus. I see you've been busy. I'll attend to that soon. Anyways, how's it going? I haven't heard from you in a while.

Quick Technical Amp Q

Oh right, hot mode doesn't go too hot, but a little bit of gain from a low-gain overdrive makes it go batshit insane. Love the way this amp interacts with drives.

10yalmost 10 years ago

Quick Technical Amp Q

Well, the EHX Boost should be basic in circuitry. However, the Melo-Verb may be the problem here. The Tremolo side most likely has a ton of circuitry. However, it has an Intensity and Volume knob. So, if I turn the Intensity to 0, no tremolo. That leaves me with a volume knob that can basically boost while any other controls are rendered useless. Keep in mind it has a reverb side, so yes. A lot of circuitry in one pedal.
