"Basically my current main "instrument" is a Macintosh G4. The absolute most recent thing Malka & I did was an a/v thing where the soundtrack was sourced only from audio recorded via the camera. There was of course heavy manipulation, looping etc. - I'm really waiting on a plug & play, cheap DV authoring solution - The highest end current generation G4s have a start on this, but we need greater capacity & not having to buy a new Mac to have it!!"

U: What is your current set-up? Are there any instruments that you've sold over the years but that you wish you'd kept?

CN: A G4, running Digidesign Pro Tools through 001. I get eighteen outputs to my Allen and Heath board. Lots of plug-ins. Hard disks full of various forms of audio. Otherwise, some guitars, a couple of MS10s and an old Casio synth. I don't sell equipment. Even though I have two samplers I never use anymore, there's no point in selling them.

"...My main working partner on Commercial Suicide was John Bonnar, a composer who knew nothing about pop music or multitracking before this. He was writing arrangements for instruments he'd never worked with before - he'd only worked with dots on lines - so it was pure excitement for him. But when we got to actually making the record, we realised we didn't know how to do it. With pop music you do the drums or a click-track first, and if you're not using drums you do the bass, so we started with the bass. We used four DXs, a Mirage and a Roland, MIDI'd together to make the fattest noise I could imagine."

"I got my Digi 001 and I tried Pro Tools and I thought, 'This is amazing software' and the sound of everything was just so much better. I immediately lost interest in MIDI. MIDI seemed to me like poking at sound down a long wire."
