Jim Matheos' Gear
Favorite piece of gear: "My Mesa/Boogie Mark lV, which l've had for about 20 years, lt took me a long time to handle it the right way, because subtle changes in how you set the controls can make a big difference. But it's really rewarding in the end and more unique sounding than a lot of what's out there."
Used heavily on the first 4 Fates Warning albums. Wish I never sold this one!

My first "real" guitar. Doesn't get much use these days, but I try to use it at least once on every record.

"My SansAmp PSA-1. A lot of people don't realize this, but I use it a lot, lt's got a great tone to it. I use it rn combination with the Mark lV in the studro, and that's what makes my sound."
Both used for the Perfect Symmetry tours and while writing Parallels.
My main acoustic from 1988 until the late 90s. I still use it a lot for writing and demos, but if I have any serious recording to do I'll usually borrow a Taylor or something.

Matheos might have scaled back his setup, but he still manages to extract a lot of sounds from his rig, thanks to his Ground Control unit. "ln a typical set, l've probably got a good 4o sounds programmed in there," he says. "Before each show, l'll program one bank with two dirty channels, one semi-dirty channel, a couple clean channels and a lead channel. lf we run three songs together l'll try to get them all in one bank. Than I just go up a bank for the next set of songs."
