On pg. 3 of this interview in Tone Quest Report Vol. 9 #5, published March 2008, Mike Campbell states the following about the Echoplex:

In the early days, there weren’t many pedals that I’d use. I would use the preamp in the Echoplex for my edge if I needed distortion, as the Super Beatles were really clean. I think the secret to my distortion and sustain is the Echoplex driving into the Super Beatle. I occasionally used a wah wah, but most of my sound is that old, noisy tube Echoplex into the Super Beatle.

The Echoplex is also mentioned in this March 1983 Musician article.

Ever loyal to their roots, both Petty and Campbell play through very cool looking Vox Super Beatle amps, jazzed up with Echoplex and MXR Dyna Comp.

Mentioned by recording engineer Richard Dodd in this Sound on Sound interview about the recording of "Learning to Fly".

"One of the amplifiers Mike was using was an open-back Ampeg, and I had a Shure SM57 on that while, to capture some low end, I had the bright idea of also sticking one of those flat PZM microphones onto the amp. It was the Radio Shack mic, not the posh Crown version, and I just blended that in. Being omnidirectional, it gave a little of the environment, and those mics were blended together and went through a Urei 1176. Typically, the pre would be an outboard Neve 1073 or an API, and only things like percussion would use the preamps on the console.

"The same recording method was used for the other guitars, with the exception of the PZM.

This unit powers on however it will need repairs to get it to function properly. Upon testing it just produces a very loud buzz/hum and nothing else. Not exactly sure what the diagnosis is so a professional will likely have to open it up and diagnose.

“Runnin’ Down a Dream” was done at my house, and I had a setup at the time where I was using a little Ampeg Rocket out in the garage, and wide with that in the studio I had a GrooveTube preamp which was overdriven, so between the two we blended it together, and I used an SG Junior with the one P90 through it and we came up with that sound." says Mike on page 6 of an interview in The Tone Quest Report (Vol 9 #5 published March 2008).

(...) below: This is a very good Guitar Player magazine issue from July 2006. In this issue, Tom is asked and talks about his gear and his guitars. From the interview, in the quote on the right, he reveals his thoughts and feelings about his recording studio secret weapon, his Epiphone Casino. Also included in the issue is an informative and detailed interview with Mike Campbell about his tone and gear too. That's Mike's Fender Broadcaster up at the top of the magazine cover!

Campbell himself mentions the guitar in this September 1999 "Spotlight on a Heartbreaker" interview from the official Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers website.

20) Tere in TX, Roxanne in NY, Ron in MA, Tim in FL, Jeremy, Cecilyn in CA, Daria and Christine asked: How many guitars do you have and what are your favorites in your collection? I'm ashamed that I don't know exactly how many guitars I have. I just got three this month ---- near 200 I guess. I'm starting to give some of them away --- no room. My favorite is my Fender Broadcaster......I'm designing one right now with a guy from Detroit. It will be a cross between Garcia's tiger and a Fender Jaguar. 31) Mike asked: Is the Telecaster you've been playing on this tour the Broadcaster that you used to play in the '70s and '80s? If it is, what made you decide to take a guitar of that value back out on the road? I brought the Broadcaster out for two reasons: It sounds amazing and I figured why not share the tone?

On pg. 4 of this interview in Tone Quest Report Vol. 9 #5, published March 2008, Mike Campbell states the following about acquiring the Broadcaster:

The first time I saw you live in the ‘70s, you were playing a goldtop Les Paul with the P90 covers removed and the pink coils exposed… It sounded great.

I love that guitar, and it was my first Gibson. When we were in the studio for the first album and we just had the Fenders, I thought, “I’ve gotta have a Gibson,” so I went into a store, and I actually got the Gibson and the Broadcaster the same day. I got the goldtop because I wanted something that I could play solos on – something with more sustain. As far as the Broadcaster, I didn’t know what I was getting – I thought it was just a Telecaster. These are amazing guitars that we’ve used on just about every record. So really, my original ’64 Strat, the goldtop and the Broadcaster are our recording gold. Anytime that we needed a sound we could go to those guitars. Even to this day, you just pull them out and get the job done.

A transitional blond tolex stack was listed for sale on Reverb.com on July 21, 2017.

This Fender Showman Head and 1x15 Cab is owned by Mike Campbell

Serial: A 00824 The head and cabinet both have a decent amount of dirt on them. The tolex on the cabinet is ripped in several places. The grill cloth on the head is also slightly ripped and worn. Aside from cosmetic flaws the amp functions and sounds great! This head requires a vintage style foot switch to control the vibrato which we did not have so it is uncertain if the vibrato works. A foot switch will need to be purchased separately. The cabinet comes in a road case that has "TB & HB" stenciled on the side. The head does not come with a road case. Super cool relic of the road!

This Guild Thunderverb is owned by Mike Campbell

Serial: 4506 The amp is a bit dirty but is in overall pretty good shape. When the amp fired up it was a bit noisy at the start but that seemed to fade. Other intermittent white noises come up here and there. This amp would likely benefit from a tune up. The reverb and tremolo both function and this amp comes with the foot switch. This is a unique amp where there is one main speaker and then a smaller speaker that is strictly for the reverb. This thing sounds so incredible!

24) Mark in GA asked: What kind of guitar, pick-ups, amps, any effects pedals, etc. did you use to get the sound for "Don't Come Around Here No More?" On "Don't Come Around Here No More" I used a gold top Les Paul through a rat distortion pedal with a boss octaver and a wah wah pedal through an Ampeg rocket amp.....also used a slide bottle.
