Eric Clapton gifted a 1957 Les Paul Standard to George Harrison in 1968. This guitar started as a goldtop but was refinished to cherry red, earning it the nickname "Lucy" after Lucille Ball, at the Gibson Kalamazoo factory. Harrison said, “[Eric and I] used to hang out such a lot at that period, and Eric gave me a fantastic Les Paul guitar, which is the one he plays on [“While My Guitar Gently Weeps”]. So it worked out well.”

In an interview with G.A.S.P. Mag in Autumn 1994, Quorthon mentions he found back his inspiration when he purchased a 1957 Black Top Gibson Les Paul: "I wasn´t enjoying playing guitar anymore and, just out of coincidence, a week before I went into the studio I happened to walk into a music shop and I saw this Gibson Les Paul Black Top from 1957. I always dreamed of owning one of those legendary guitars because of Ace Frehley, of course. [...] I bought it and playing that guitar in the studio made me feel like going back to the roots, not Satan and speed, but my roots. It was a way for me to come to terms with if I really wanted to continue playing."

Rick Derringer was traded this Goldtop Les Paul Standard 1965 from fellow guitarist John Sebastian of the band The Loving Spoonful in exchange for a guitar amplifier. In this state, it came with a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. In 1966, Rick decided to return the then-worn guitar to the Gibson factory to have it refinished in SG red and the Bigsby tailpiece uninstalled in favor of a standard stopbar tailpiece. Unhappy with the result, Rick sold the guitar to Dan Armstrong's guitar shop in New York, where Eric Clapton would purchase it the following week and gift it to George Harrison of the Beatles, who dubbed it "Lucy".
