Steve Gunn's Gear

"I mostly play a Guild guitar—a D-35 from 1970. I like these guitars because I’m pretty much a Craigslist-gear-bargain guy—though I do have an expensive electric that was custom made for me. I’m afraid to get a really valuable acoustic for the amount of touring I do—I’d be afraid to kick it around. Guilds are perfect for me: They’re well built but not expensive, and they sound so good and are especially easy to come by in the Northeast. I’ve been using them for a long time and will definitely continue to do so. "

"I play both acoustic and electric guitar with this one, and it’s pairing well with a Fender Princeton or Deluxe. The Electro–Harmonix Soul Food clean boost pedal has also been a constant, and is always switched on."

"At the moment, I’ve been relying a lot on Catalinbread’s Belle Epoch tape delay. For me, it’s the closest simulation to a vintage Echoplex that I’ve found. “Guitar wise, I used a new Fender American Professional Jaguar through a vintage Fender Princeton amp. There are a few songs that feature some wah leads on the album, and these effects were my primary set up for that. This is the first song on the album, and I wanted to establish this sound early on by cutting this lead at the end. The smaller Princeton amp breaks up nicely, along with the wah with a cranked overdrive, and a bit of compression is a sound that runs throughout the album.”

"Now I use EarthQuaker Devices’ Palisades for that mostly, mixed with delay and wah. I’ve been trying different variations of this set up for a while now, not really adding but substituting effects with an occasional wild card thrown in for more noisy textures like the EarthQuaker Devices Tentacle for fuzz wah or a robotic feedback experiment."
