Placing the Freeze before modulation pedals allows capturing entire modulation cycles, creating distinct layers between frozen and live sounds.

Comparisons
-
While the Superego+ offers additional features like gliss and layering, the Freeze is appreciated for its simplicity and ease of use in sustaining sounds.
Source -
Unlike the Oceans 11 reverb pedal, the Freeze sustains a true copy of the original signal, not just the reverb, offering more pronounced sustain capabilities.
Source -
The Superego+ offers versatile effects like pitch shift, tremolo, and more, but its knob-based control system can be cumbersome for quick adjustments during live performances.
Source
Use cases and applications
-
The Freeze's latching capabilities allow it to be used creatively in post-rock projects to sustain extended notes and create drone effects.
Source -
The Freeze is praised for its ability to sustain a note or chord as an expressive solo component, allowing for simultaneous lead and rhythm playing.
Source -
Using a solid-state amp with the Freeze helps capture clean drones effectively, as the aim is not to push tubes but to layer effects over a stable signal.
Source -
The EHX Freeze allows for creating layered chord voicings, dense note clusters, and shifting pedal tones, enhancing jazz and ambient performances.
Source -
Splitting the signal with an ABY or tuner allows the Freeze to run into its own amp, maintaining clean pad sounds while applying distortion separately to the main signal.
Source -
Positioning the Freeze after dirt pedals but before fuzzy distortion can create unique crackly, bubbly fuzz drones, ideal for experimental or doom metal sounds.
Source -
For rhythm players, the Freeze can be latched just after chord changes to provide fuller soundscapes in a three-piece band setup.
Source
Mods and upgrades
-
Owners recommend swapping the stock footswitch for a soft-click version to enhance performance, especially during quiet, ambient sessions.
Source
Features and functionality
-
The Freeze pedal's soft switch feature is now standard, eliminating the click sound that was distracting during low-volume ambient performances.
Source -
The Freeze pedal includes adjustable fade times, a feature not immediately obvious to some users, enhancing control over sound transitions.
Source -
The EHX Freeze captures a brief loop upon activation, and the volume of the frozen notes varies depending on when it is triggered during the sound's decay.
Source -
Owners note the usefulness of placing the Freeze pedal before a looper in the FX loop to create ambient, layered sounds with chorus, delay, and reverb.

Great for solo acoustic shows
This pedal really adds a different texture to the live guitar sound that removes the need for MIDI triggers. There’s no control over the tone and timing the for switch takes a little practice, but that’s manageable. Give us a deluxe version and I’ll be buying it straight away! However, this US such an incredible utility pedal that everyone should have one!

Great for practice
I use this pedal mostly for practice--I would strum a chord that a guitar would play and then solo over it with my bass. The sound retention is great, and the fact that it's buffered bypass is ideal for having it at the end of my signal chain.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
I use the latch mode with the level at 50%.

Great effect!
But .. after a year regulator of the "Effect level" began to rustle, unfortunately ... and the pleasure from the pedal decreased. I have 8 pedals and only this one rustles. Also he capricious to the power supply. Too few tuning controls.

Not much fun on its own, but paired up....?
It only does one thing! It does it well though. It uses granular synthesis to freeze the spectral bins of whatever you've just played, and then it plays it back to you forever in latch mode. Initially I thought, 'that's nice...but how can I actually make use of it?'. The answer for me was to get some sort of looper. Then, using the Freeze pedal, it becomes possible to build up huge layers of synth guitar, note-by-note. I think EHX actually want you to do this; they probably envisioned that players would couple this with all sorts of other effects like modulations, delays and reverbs so that we could all do Brian Eno impersonations in our bedrooms. Which, it seems, is exactly what we're doing! Of course, it works just as well with synths etc.

You have any issues when you engage & it causing a tick or blip? I swapped out for a different toggle & it’s all fixed up. Eno the fuck out indeed!

Great fun, and pretty sounding pedal.
I've had the EHX Freeze for a couple of weeks now and I've loved it. I haven't messed around too much with the fast and slow settings as I've only been using it to sustain chords for the intros in songs and to use in conjunction with delay to make noise.
But what I have been using it for has been great. It's done exactly what I want it to and I'm keen to see how much more I can do with it

The Secret Weapon for Trios
One of my favorites. I bought it not entirely convinced. It's ideal for creating atmospheric cushions where uncomfortable voids are generated.

Little pricey, find a used one
Pricey pedal, but I found one used for $60 (Canadian). Great for creating a soundscape. I use it live and in the studio to fill the sound, and is great for practicing on your own to have something to play over. Also great for sustaining notes in a solo (if youre into that). Works best for my shoegaze-style playing, or ambient stuff

This Freeze will give you chills...bad pun intended.
I’ve had this pedal for sometime and I love it, it’s pretty useful in creating ambient drones and textures. This pedal is pretty straight forward and fun to use,

Unique effect
I really like Electro Harmonix pedals, their ideas are always interesting and they've been around as long as I've been playing. This pedal is unique as far as I know, it holds whatever you play into it for as long as you want, so its not the same as a sampler or looper pedal, it creates a new sound instead of a copy.

EHX Freeze
A cool concept, though im not sure how much longer it'l be on my board. I have yet to find a use for it live, and really just mess around with noodling over pedal notes.

According to this article Jonny Greenwood uses an Electro Harmonix Freeze Pedal, which can be seen on the photo of his pedalboard on the left side.
This photograph comes from MixOnline's article about recording Noel Gallagher's "Who Built The Moon". Judging by the many pedals already known to be in Gallagher's possession (Catalinbread Echorec, Strymon el Capistan) and the mention in the article that he owns over 300 pedals, we can certainly conclude that those were his pedals. One of the pedals that can be seen in the batch is the EHX Freeze Sound Retainer.
"We've got the Freeze here. Josh likes non-guitaristic appraoches to guitar playing. Sometimes he'll just flip between that and the DD-6 next to it," says Josh Klinghoffer's guitar tech.

A compact, more tweakable evolution of the Freeze, per the official product description:
Meeting between the original Freeze and Superego pedals is the Pico Deep Freeze Sound Retainer. With the ability to freeze a moment in sound, the Deep Freeze can act as a sustain pedal for holding chords and notes as backing for your playing or as a platform to manipulate your tone into new sounds impossible with a normal guitar. In addition to the original Freeze’s abilities, the Deep Freeze features layering, adjustable attack/decay speeds, glissando, dedicated volume controls, and 3 modes: Latch, Moment, and Auto, making it powerful pedal punching well above its weight.
