Zachary Cole Smith

Cole can be seen playing a sunburst Jazzmaster while recording Deceiver in DIIV's Starting Now documentary from 5:37 - 5:45.

Zachary has been playing this Fender Blacktop Jaguar ever since he started his project DIIV, as can see in his live perfomances, the appearance of the guitar already shows that it has been used a lot. It has a peeling in white, losing the original colour (black) of the guitar. In the white part it has a "HI" written in black adhesive tape, and in the black part it has a "DARLING" written in white adhesive tape.

Used for the DIIV European tour 2015 before the release of DIIV's second album, 'Is The Is Are'. Cole here in the photo and the video uses a Black Fender Cyclone HH with a sticker in white with black text reading, "Grinning."

Cole has continued to use this guitar both live and in the studio. As a result of touring and recording, the guitar has been adorned with new stickers, paint chips, and has had various volume and tone knobs over the years. The control plate is frequently held down by tape.

In this video posted on Instagram you can see Cole (and his cats) unboxing a white fender duo-sonic and a black duo-sonic hs, both from fender's offset series.

Smith can be seen here playing an Epiphone Wilshire worn reissue is dark gray. The headstock was broken off on July 10th, 2013, according to Smith's Instagram account. This guitar was used in a lot of DIIV's earlier shows, notably 2013's Cochella.

In a photo shared by DIIV's Instagram account, @lovealianzzz, Zachary Cole Smith is seen in the control room during the recording of "Is the Is Are." He is using a Gibson Custom Shop 1960 Les Paul Special Doublecut Reissue in TV Yellow. While this model typically doesn't feature humbuckers, it appears to be either a custom order or modified version.

Zachary Cole Smith has been utilizing the Fender Squier Contemporary Stratocaster HH as a secondary guitar during live performances, complementing his primary Fender Cyclone HH. This guitar has been featured in performances of songs including "Under the Sun," "Take Your Time," "Air Conditioning," "Incarnate Devil," and "Acheron." Evidence of its use is supported by an image showing Smith with the guitar in question. You can only vaguely tell it’s the strat based on the colour and part of the body shape, but I remember it being the Squier Contemporary Stratocaster HH, and other DIIV fans have said so too.

During the live performance of DIIV on KEXP, Zachary Cole Smith is observed playing the Fender Vintera II '70s Telecaster Deluxe at the 5:58 mark of the track "Somber The Drums," as documented by KEXP on YouTube.
