Description

The Supro 1605R Reverb amplifier packs a punch in a sleek, compact form that's perfect for musicians on the move. Offering 5 watts of power, this 1x8 combo amp is a versatile addition to any setup, whether you're jamming at home or gigging on stage. It features a tube-driven spring reverb, which provides a warm, vintage sound that harks back to the classic Supro amps of the 1960s. With independent gain and master volume controls, you can dial in your perfect tone with precision, while the 2-band EQ allows for further sound shaping.

What sets the 1605R apart is its trio of tube-driven line outputs. These outputs—WET, DRY, and MIX—offer flexibility for both live performances and studio sessions. The WET output gives you a pure reverb signal, the DRY output delivers the raw preamp sound, and the MIX output lets you blend both, with a variable level control to find your sweet spot. This design allows for creative routing, whether you're using the amp as an outboard gain/reverb unit or a direct recording preamp.

To ensure authentic vintage tone, the Supro 1605R is equipped with a custom-made 8" speaker developed by Eminence and Supro, drawing inspiration from a classic Jensen speaker. This attention to detail ensures that every note you play has a rich, resonant quality that stands out in any mix.

Key Features:

  • Tube-driven spring reverb
  • Independent gain and master volume controls
  • 2-band EQ for tone shaping

  • Custom 8" speaker designed by Eminence and Supro

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Supro 1605R.

Comparisons

  • The Supro 1605R's volume is compared to a '76 Champ 6W with an 8" speaker, noting that both may struggle in a full band setting without a mic.

    Source
  • The Keeley Custom is noted to lack substantial gain and has EQ knobs with a limited influence range, making it challenging to dial in desired tones.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • It's noted that a 5W amp with an 8" speaker, like the Supro 1605R, may only suit low-volume band rehearsals unless mic'd.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Some users question the high price of the Supro 1605R, suggesting its sound quality doesn't justify the cost for a 5W 1x8 setup.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The amp is praised for its sound quality, though its ability to cut through a full band mix without miking is doubted.

    Source
  • The amp has multiple outputs, potentially acting as a dedicated reverb tank; ensure the correct output is used for the intended sound.

    Source
  • The line out on the '64 Reverb can be noisy due to ground loops, and an IR is recommended for optimal sound quality.

    Source
  • The Delta King 10 offers great tones at comfortable volumes with a master volume for low-volume breakup and impressive built-in spring reverb.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Loose speaker connections can be an issue; securing them with electrical tape may prevent weak connections or disconnections.

    Source
  • A bad preamp tube could cause reduced volume; replacing the 12AX7 tube might resolve this problem.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners report the amp only delivers usable volume and tone at full gain and master volume, limiting its versatility in quieter settings.

    Source
  • The '64 Reverb is appreciated for its non-boxy sound, contrary to concerns about the 8" speaker size.

With its retro-modern design and classic vintage reverb, the Supro 1605R is undeniably a stylish choice for players seeking a compact amp. The guitar-friendly frequency range and clever output options offer great versatility for recording and practice. However, while its build quality and character shine, the amp’s price tag may deter some budget-conscious musicians. Overall, this little giant delivers a unique sound and aesthetic, making it a compelling option for those willing to invest.

Supro 1606 Super and 1605R Reviews | Performer Mag

performermag.com

The Supro 1605R delivers a rich, versatile tone that caters to a range of styles, making it a worthy addition for any guitarist. With simple controls and impressive low-end output from its small 8" speaker, it surprises with its warmth and clarity—even at lower volumes. However, the retro-style knobs can be hard to read, which may frustrate some users. While priced at $999, the sound quality and responsiveness justify the investment for those seeking a reliable tube amp. Ultimately, it's a strong choice for musicians looking to enhance their pedalboards without sacrificing tone.

Warm tube sound and keeping the neighbours happy

I have this little amp at home. It has a really warm sound, but if you want to, you can make it dirty and loud. And also the reverb on this amp is very soothing!
