Analog Man is a boutique guitar effects company founded and operated by Mike Piera out of Bethel, Connecticut. Piera's involvement with vintage gear began in the mid-1980s when he relocated to Japan as a software engineer and encountered a thriving market for vintage American guitars and effects pedals. He began importing and reselling gear under the Analog Man name starting in 1993, building a reputation for Tube Screamer modification work — converting TS9 pedals to TS-808 specifications using period-correct JRC4558D chips sourced in Tokyo. He transitioned to running Analog Man full time in 2000, establishing a small shop in Bethel, CT, and was among the first boutique pedal makers to sell directly through a website.
The company produces a focused lineup of handmade, hand-soldered effects built in the USA. The King of Tone overdrive — introduced in 2003 as a heavily modified dual-channel take on the Marshall Bluesbreaker circuit — became one of the most coveted pedals in the boutique market, earning cult status for its clean boost, overdrive, and distortion modes and famously long wait times for new orders. The Prince of Tone offers a single-channel variant of the same circuit. The Sun Face series covers a range of germanium and silicon fuzz pedals based on classic vintage designs, and the ARDX20 provides a dual analog delay. Analog Man also produces compressors and continues to offer pedal modification and repair services.
Notable players associated with Analog Man gear include David Gilmour, who used a Sun Face RCA fuzz on his 2006 tour, and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, a long-time Sun Face user. The King of Tone has attracted fans including Ed O'Brien, Noel Gallagher, and Brad Whitford. The company has also collaborated with other manufacturers, including the Duke of Tone — a compact overdrive co-developed with MXR.
Analog Man has 69 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Fuzz Effects Pedals, Overdrive Effects Pedals, and Compressor Effects Pedals. Their gear is featured by 217 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Folk, World, & Country, and Blues. Notable users include Al Schnier, Dan Auerbach, and Marc Ford. Most Analog Man products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
