Hear Michael Landau demo his new $385 Vemuram Butter Machine distortion pedal and explain why it finally replaced his Maxon SD-9 | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Vemuram Butter Machine Overdrive has garnered high praise, especially from guitarist Michael Landau, who claims it's the best distortion pedal he's ever used. Priced at $385, it offers a natural, open sound with extensive tuning options, allowing players to achieve their ideal overdrive without losing clarity. While some might hesitate at the cost, Landau's assertion of its superiority over his previous Maxon SD-9, coupled with its innovative features like trim pots for fine-tuning, makes it an enticing choice for tone-seekers. However, the hefty price tag may deter budget-conscious musicians. Overall, it's a premium pedal that promises to elevate any rig.

Tube-like distortion pedal

This is a permanent fixture in my pedalboard. This is essentially a Maxon SD-9 with better controls. The sweep on the gain knob is a lot more linear than the original Maxon. I don't use this as a distortion pedal, rather I use it as an overdrive. It's not at all transparent like the Jan Ray or ODR-1 or even the OCD (on low settings) and it will change your tone, but in a good way in my opinion. The distorted tones coming out of it don't sound like any other overdrive or distortion. It is very unique. It is hard to describe but imagine an old glassy Fender amp with a distortion in front it. That's what it sounds like.

Vemuram reverse engineered Michael Landau's Maxon SD-9 to come up with the design of the Butter Machine. They took the best qualities of the SD-9 and added features that Michael Landau requested. The Butter Machine is almost a permanent fixture in my main pedalboard.
