We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Apple iPod Touch 5th/6th Generation.

Features and functionality

  • All iPod Touch models, including the 5th and 6th generations, use a Cirrus DAC, not the Wolfson DAC, which is common in older iPod Classics.

    Source
  • The 7th gen is described as nearly five times more powerful than the 6th gen, with better iOS support and marginally improved camera quality.

    Source
  • The 7th generation iPod Touch features a more modern interface, providing a clear separation between books and music in the artist list, enhancing user navigation.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Newer iPod Touch models like the 6th generation provide better app support for games and streaming services due to updated software capabilities.

    Source

  • Users note that a third-party Lightning to 3.5mm adapter can bypass the onboard DAC, enhancing sound quality, and works with both 5th and 6th gen models.

    Source
  • Owners have modified both the 5th and 7th gen iPod Touch with Taptic engines, iQuad, and larger batteries to enhance performance and usability.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The sound quality debate often relates to the iPod Classic and Nano ranges, not the iPod Touch, which consistently uses the same DAC across models.

    Source
  • Some users choose the 7th gen iPod Touch over the 5th for its superior interface and build, although both are used in parallel with other devices like the Sony NWA306.

    Source

User experience

  • The 5th gen is reported to have the best battery life among all iPod Touch models, according to users with multiple generations.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The 6th gen is criticized for its high price relative to its performance and features, suggesting that investing a bit more in the 7th gen is preferable.

    Source

Build quality

  • The plastic case of the 5th gen is criticized for its low quality, resembling that of Chinese clones, which impacts its durability.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The 5th generation model, referred to as 5.5, is noted for its slightly different sound delivery, favored by some for specific audio experiences.

Critic Reviews

iPod Touch (5th Generation) review | TechRadar

techradar.com

While the iPod Touch 6th Gen boasts larger capacity and faster performance, the 5th Gen wins hearts with its colorful design and lightweight feel. It features a better screen, upgraded camera, and improved earphones, making it a compelling choice for media and gaming enthusiasts. However, the reliance on iTunes and the introduction of the lightning port could be potential drawbacks. Overall, the iPod Touch 5th Gen remains a vibrant and economical alternative for those seeking Apple's ecosystem without the hefty price tag of an iPhone.

Apple iPod Touch (5th gen) review | What Hi-Fi?

whathifi.com

The Apple iPod Touch 5th Generation impresses with its sleek design, improved sound quality, and vibrant display. It stands out with a larger, clearer screen and a responsive interface, offering a satisfying multimedia experience. The build quality is top-notch, reflecting Apple's signature aesthetic. However, the high price and competition from small tablets like the Nexus 7 challenge its value proposition. While the EarPods offer a better audio experience than previous iterations, audiophiles might still prefer investing in higher-end headphones. Despite its niche appeal in a smartphone-dominated market, the iPod Touch remains the best of its kind, deserving a full five-star rating for its polished features and performance.

iPod Touch 5th Generation Review - iPod Reviews by MobileTechReview

mobiletechreview.com

The Apple iPod Touch 5th Generation impresses with its sleek design, vibrant 4" Retina display, and improved speed over previous models, making it a great media player within Apple's rich ecosystem. However, it lags behind the latest iPhone in terms of CPU/GPU performance and comes with a hefty price tag, lacking a more affordable 16GB option. While it remains a powerful and stylish device for music and media consumption, the high cost may deter some potential buyers.

Review: Should you buy Apple's 6th Generation iPod touch? (Video) - 9to5Mac

9to5mac.com

The Apple iPod Touch 6th Generation offers a solid performance boost with its A8 processor and improved 8-megapixel camera, making it a viable option for those without an iPhone. While it shares similarities with the iPhone 5s, it lacks LTE and GPS, and doesn't include a Touch ID or NFC for Apple Pay. The absence of a larger display and the Loop accessory may disappoint some users. However, its affordability, range of storage options, and suitability as a portable gaming device or music player in the iOS ecosystem make it a worthy consideration for newcomers or those on a budget.

iPod touch 6th generation review

idownloadblog.com

The iPod Touch 6th Generation is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, boasting an A8 chip, improved camera, and enhanced multitasking capabilities. It's ideal for gaming, photos, and media without the need for phone features, offering great value at $199. However, its 4" screen feels outdated compared to newer iPhones, and the lack of Touch ID is a letdown. Despite these flaws, it's a compelling entry-level iOS device and a worthy upgrade for previous iPod users.

Intense!

Mine is black and has a cracked screen. It has some really cool features. It's also quite good for filming videos except for the fact that it stops the video after one minute and forty seven seconds. It's really cool.

awsomecp173

I have 4th Gen.

I have the 4th Gen version (which I cracked LOL). It gets slow and laggier as time progresses but for a kid who is an Apple Fangirl and doesn't need to call, they should get it.

Personally, I kind of think it's overpriced.

SO many possibilities!

The Apple iPod TOuch is great for everything! You can use it for music, social, gaming, and much more! It doesn't have a great long distance speaker, but close up is great.
