"With Depeche, we were using the ARP 16-step sequencer. Then it was a Roland MC-4, and then a 16-step sequencer make by a company called Umi, which was made to be used with the BBC Micro. They all did what we needed them to do."
Fortunately for John, he also owns a UMI/BBC B micro sequencer package (see last month's review). "The only way I can repeat the dynamics on the RX11 is by programming the thing with my UMI so that the UMI stores and remembers the dynamics on the drum machine which have been played on my DX7 keyboard."
Whether Blancmange's experiments will continue to be made public remains to be seen since their writing process has recently been enhanced by the acquisition of a pair (one each) of UMI 2B sequencer interfaces, which they use with the BBC micro. They are so chuffed with the UMI 2B that they now regard it as an essential part of the writing, and we waded through to the backroom where they put it through its paces for my benefit.
